Martin Kellogg Obituary
Martin Kellogg Jr., 93, of Manteo, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Norfolk, Va.
Mr. Kellogg was born in Sunbury, N.C., and lived most of his life in Manteo.
Mr. Kellogg was an practicing attorney for 64 years beginning his law practice in 1931 when he established what is known today as Kellogg and Evans Law Firm, he was a former prosecutor for Dare County and was honored by the First Judicial Bar on October 9, 1981 for 50 years of outstanding service. He was called ""A fine lawyer, a good citizen and a true gentleman."" Mr. Kellogg retired from Practicing law in 1995. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a avid Tar Heel Fan, Mr. Kellogg received recognition for 37 years of service on the local selection committee for the Morehead Foundation for scholarships where he served as chairman.
Mr. Kellogg played semi pro baseball for Dare County and was known as a ""baseball player who practiced law."" Mr. Kellogg was founder of the Manteo Rotary Club and was a lifelong Rotarian, he was one of the founders of the Outer Banks Community Foundation, co-founder of the Manteo Airport, founder of the Roanoke Island Historical Society who named the Distinguished service award for him and was former mayor of Manteo. He was a member of Saint Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church and served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Kellogg was the son of the late Martin and Mary Sue Smith Kellogg Sr., and the husband of the late Jaunita Parker Kellogg.
Surviving are a sister, Bessie Kellogg Duff of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one niece, Bettie Kellogg Blanchard of Manteo; three nephews, John Gordon Kellogg of Reston, Va, Martin Kellogg White and Thomas L. White Jr., both of Manteo; one stepdaughter, Jean Parker Curtis of Elizabeth City; two step-grandchildren, Nancy Driscoll and Bill Curtis Jr. and three great-nephews.
Mr. Kellogg was pre-deceased by his sister, Almeta Kellogg Whiteand brother, John Gordon Kellogg.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Saint Andrewsby the Sea Episcopal Church by the Rev. Charles E.B. Gill. Burial will be in the Manteo Cemetery.
Friends may join the family Sunday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the residence, 401 Devon St. Manteo.
Memorials may be made to the Roanoke Island Historical Society or the Building Fund at Saint Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church.
