Nancy Stump Obituary

Nancy Banks Stump

Charlotte

Nancy Banks Stump of Charlotte passed away peacefully in Hospice House of Southminster on January 12, 2014.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, J. Ralph Stump and her two sons, Randy (and his wife Robyn) and Tim (and his wife Kim), as well as her four grandchildren, John, Erin, Stuart and Bo.

Nancy was born and raised in Garner, NC and was the daughter of Portia and Paul Banks. She was the second oldest of five siblings: Paul (deceased), Oliver, Tom and Portia Dawson. She remained close to her family throughout her life.

During her years at Garner High School she was a three year cheerleader and played varsity basketball.

After attending Mars Hill College, Nancy worked in the School of Agriculture at NC State College where she was voted to the homecoming court in 1951. She met her future husband at State and they were married later that year.

Nancy and Ralph lived in five states before permanently returning to NC in 1970. They traveled the world many times and visited 100 countries plus all 50 states. Their homes were in Charlotte, Blowing Rock and Nathans Creek.

Nancy was a strong backbone behind Ralph's successful career as a merger and acquisition banker and broker. She frequently drove the car cross country while he wrote letters and made lists. She was a mainstay at his side at furniture markets held in High Point, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco.

In her spare time, which was rare, Nancy enjoyed art, decorating and entertaining. She tutored students at Eastover elementary for many years and as a cancer survivor was a caregiver to fellow patients. In the later years, her favorite time of the week was Sunday morning when she could watch Dr. Robert Schuller and Rev. Charles Stanley preach on television. She would then relay the sermon to the family.

The family will miss her constant smiles and pretty dresses. Special thanks go out to Dr. Al Hudson and to her special caregiver Alda Orr, CNA. Memorials can be made to Search Ministries of Charlotte or to Garner Methodist Church in Garner, NC. There will be a private memorial held at the Cypress of Charlotte where she lived. The service will be led by Reverend Davis Kuykendall.

Ralph, I was saddened to hear of Nancy's passing. Nancy and I spent a little time together "working," as she called it, at a CRI convention in Miami years ago. She was fun to be with. I know you will miss her beyond words. -Barbara Gunn

Nancy Stump was certainly a fine lady. She always had a smile and kind word each time I saw her. She will truly be missed. Prayers are with the family.

Ralph, I learned that Nancy had died and felt the loss so strongly though it has been years since we last were together. She was a special lady to so many who knew her. What a tremendous partner she was. It seemed to me that she was always there smiling and lending a hand. I recall you waking me up at 3:30AM in Wilkes Barre Pa. and asking us to drive to Boston!!! Nancy got behind the wheel and we took turns driving and listening to music as you worked in the back seat. She was and remains an angel . My deepest sympathy to you and the boys and the extended family, Bart
