Peter Elkan Obituary

Peter John Elkan

Raleigh

Peter John Elkan of Raleigh, North Carolina died unexpectedly on February 24, 2015.

Peter was born on the 23rd of October 1971 in Syracuse, NY. He grew up in Cooperstown, NY, and graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1989. Peter attended Union College in Schenectady, NY, majored in civil engineering and graduated in 1993. Peter earned graduate degrees in coastal engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and in environmental policy and management from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Peter has lived in the Raleigh area since 1997. He is greatly valued by all who knew him in his various roles, including as a neighbor in Five Points, a coastal engineer, a beloved father to his daughter Sabrina, and a dear friend and family member.

Peter was an athlete and loved nature. He enjoyed photography, playing soccer, and hiking and biking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He liked to help others, and had engaged in various charitable and volunteer activities over the years, including coaching youth sports and tutoring children. He was an amazing father and a terrific uncle.

Peter had a warm and beautiful smile and a keen sense of humor. He was smart and sensitive and sincere. Peter had a way about him that often made people care for him upon meeting him and quickly endeared him to those who got to know him. He will be deeply, deeply missed by his family and his many friends who loved him.

Peter was predeceased by his mother, Susan King-Elkan of Cooperstown. He is survived by his daughter, Sabrina Elkan, of Raleigh, NC; his father Paul Sr. of Cooperstown; his sister Natalie, of Durham, NC; his brother Alexander and wife Danielle, and their sons, Maxwell and Miles of Greensboro, NC; and his brother Paul Jr. of Cooperstown.

Peter's family is planning to hold memorial services to honor Peter and celebrate his life. Services will be held both in Raleigh, NC and in Cooperstown, NY at later dates. Notice will be provided well in advance of both services, and information regarding memorial contributions will also be conveyed at that time. I met Peter in Asheville last year while I visited Prama for 10 days. He and I had many long conversations and his was such a kind, open, intentional soul who always offered a genuine and warm smile daily. He truly was a special individual in a world full of people who often don't take the time to try to 'feel' and make their lives better for themselves and those around them. It's rare to be in the presence of someone as genuine and caring as Peter was; something I sensed in just this short time I knew him. I sobbed at hearing of his passing. There aren't many people who could evoke that kind of a sense of loss after knowing them for such a brief time. When he spoke of his daughter his eyes were bright and proud. I'm so sorry for the grief of those who love him, as I imagine there are so many. Sending my thoughts and peace to Peter, his beautiful daughter and to everyone who loves him and who will always miss him. Such a loss. You are important, impactful, special, and will be remembered, Peter Elkan.
