Durham, North Carolina - Richard Nelson Hill was born April 12, 1941, in Staten Island, NY, before moving to Sebring, FL. He graduated from Sebring High School in June of 1959 as Scholar/Athlete for Florida and from Davidson College in 1963. He married Scott Beaver on December 7, 1963.
Richard was stationed in Bamberg, Germany, as an officer with the US Army from 1963 to 1966. Richard, Scott, and daughter Kathy, born in Germany in 1965, moved to Durham in 1967, where Richard earned the MAT in 1971 and the Ed D. in 1980 from Duke University. Son Chris was born in 1968. Richard taught Honors World History, AP European History, and Economics at Jordan High School from 1969-1991 and advised the model UN club and the Quiz Bowl. He also supervised MAT students and organized more than a dozen trips to Europe with his wife, Scott, for high school students. He taught at Riverside High School from 1991-2001, designing the AP and Honors World History courses.
Retiring in 2001, he designed and taught online AP European History courses for LearnNC from 2002-2005; his curriculum was used as a model for remote, online instruction. He taught Art His-tory and Durham Regional History through Olli (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute).
He volunteered as a docent with Duke University's Nasher Museum of Art for almost ten years. He served as President of Sister Cities of Durham, traveling to Tanzania, Siberia, England, and Japan to represent his beloved city.
Richard is preceded in death by parents Alice Jowitt Hill and Arnold Hill and brothers Larry Hill and Jeffrey Hill. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Scott Hill, daughter Kathy Starks (Phillip Ewing) of Johnson City, NY and son Chris Hill of Durham; grandchildren Geoffrey Starks of Syracuse, NY, Meredith Starks of Atlanta, GA, Brendan Hill of Raleigh, and Fiona Hill of Boone; daughter-in-law Alex LeMay; brother Don Hill (Patricia); sister-in-law Patricia Beaver (Bob White), and beloved nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Sat. Feb. 26 at 2 PM at Few Chapel, Croasdaile Village, Durham, NC. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to Durham Public Schools Founda-tion, 411 W. Chapel Hill St., Suite C2, Durham, NC 27701.
