I always wished I could spend time with Mr. DeCosa and you and express how much I appreciate your presence in our lives. When I think about the good parts of my childhood, I remember you and Mr. DeCosa. When I think about people who were kind to my family, I always think of you and Mr. DeCosa. And I know we were close to your hearts. Mr. DeCosa kept all the letters I’ve written to you as proof of that. I will always remember Mr. DeCosa as a handy, skilled, kind and generous man. I know that he is with God now and is receiving his crowns for all of his good deeds. May he rest in peace and you rest assured that he is enjoying the pastures of heaven.”

Mr. (and Mrs.) DeCosa are family. They knew the Joseph kids before we were born. Some random memories I have of Mr. DeCosa are: The love and kindness shown to our multiracial family whether out in public or in our homes, in a town that frowned upon us. All the “coffees” that he and my father had, which felt like they were daily for most of my childhood. His pickup trucks (the red one, the yellow one, maybe a blue one). All the rides home when he saw me walking on Rte 7, the rides up our long driveway, going in the river behind his house with us, his pocket knife, his harmonica, and the many jokes he had. He filled our hearts with love and lafter. He was there for good times, bad times, and everything in between. I remember him getting “in trouble” with Mrs. DeCosa (mostly on purpose), just to get a childish reaction from us kids. The love he had for Mrs. DeCosa, was beautiful and they danced so wonderfully together. One of the most meaningful memories I have is when they drove down with my family from CT in a rented passenger van to my 2015 wedding in Virginia. It was like 12 people in what had to be the longest, most uncomfortable, yet entertaining ride. I love that they were here for everything, the family pictures, and I was able to see them dance one more time. Thank you for being our family Mr.DeCosa.

Where to begin? I don't know, except to say that he loved me and always showed me love; he believed in me and supported me and helped me more times than I can count. He was always one of my biggest fans - no matter the artistic or academic endeavor. Every life-event that occurred, he was present and loving! He had a fantastic sense of humor and was always cracking jokes! He was always there for my parents - my family. He made life in little old Gaylordsville more possible! I'm ever-so-grateful that he was my godfather! I loved him and will continue to love him! May the Lord bless his soul for the million times he's blessed my life and my family!!!

He will always be a part of my childhood memories and many of the smiles I had were of watching the laughter he brought to my siblings, myself and the friendship he gave to my father. He was so giving of his time and I will always remember that as a great example of generosity.
