DANBURY-João Braz, 91, passed away on May 22, 2025, at the Centro Hospitalar do Oeste in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.
Born on July 1, 1933, in Trabalhias, Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, João married the love of his life, Rosa Margarida Raimundo, in 1953. Together, they raised seven children in a close and loving family.
João immigrated to the United States in 1972, and his family followed two years later. After first living in upstate New York, they soon settled in Danbury, CT, where João founded a successful construction company. Despite his professional responsibilities, he was actively engaged in the community. However, he was most proud of his children and grandchildren's professional success and the ability of many to pursue post-secondary education.
Recently, João returned to Portugal to live in the house that he and Rosa had built. He kept busy with numerous projects, particularly involving his beloved garden.
João is survived by six children: Joe (Diane); Albert (Carolyn Kapron); Carlos (Fabiana); Maria (Robert Danges); Alzira (Sinan Baskent); and Cristina (Stephen Taylor). He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren: Jessica Bras Walker (Kevin Walker), Andrea Chong Bras (Joaquín Longhi Díaz), Jonathan Kapron Braz (Nora Dietrich), Alison Kapron Braz (Richard Jones), Simone Bras Batish (Paul Batish), Conrad Bras, Eduardo Bras, Kyle Danges (Greta Fontanella), James Baskent, Sophia Taylor, and Evan Taylor; and four great-grandchildren: Layla Rose Walker, Kevin Walker, Claire Hua, and Veronica Batish.
João was predeceased by his wife Rosa in 1997 and by their second child, Manuel, in 1974.
A funeral service will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 149 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 7.
