Russell Devin Obituary

Devin, Russell
Russell Louis Devin died Oct. 12, 2012 at the age of 83. His race ended just before 2:30 p.m. His time on earth is over and he is now in the hands of our loving and merciful Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen C. Devin, on Dec. 6, 2004. Mr. Devin was born Sept. 23, 1929 He was a New Milford High School teacher, coach and administrator. His life accomplishments are described in the words on a plaque he received upon his induction into the New Milford High School Hall of Fame in 2001: "Russell L. Devin was born in Brunswick, Maine, in 1929, the fourth of six children of Emmanuel and Anita Devin, and the only son. "He received his elementary education at St. John's Parochial School in Brunswick and his secondary education at Brunswick High School. "When he entered elementary school, Russ spoke no English, but by high school graduation he had compiled an outstanding academic as well as athletic record. "He excelled in football and track but also participated in swimming and basketball. "At the end of his sophomore year, he enlisted in the United States Army, returning to resume his education a year later."Among his many accomplishments, he was the high school pole vault champion for the state of Maine."Using the credits he had earned under the G.I. Bill, he enrolled in Tufts University and studied chemistry and biology. "He continued his athletic career as a 145-pound defensive safety on the football team and as a four-year member of the track team, excelling in the pole vault. "A non-scholarship athlete, he entirely financed the final two years of his studies through summer and on-campus work, and, even though he had to withdraw for a semester to meet expenses, managed to graduate with his class."He continued his education, receiving his master of science degree in administration from the University of Bridgeport in 1961 and was selected to be a participant in several summer institutes sponsored by the National Science Foundation during the 1950s and the early '60s. "Russ came to New Milford in September 1953 to begin a career of teaching and coaching that included the better part of four decades, retiring in 1987. "He began by teaching chemistry, physics and math and was named the first chairman of the science department. He was named vice-principal and eventually served as principal for two years before returning to his real interest - the classroom. "He established the first NMHS cross country team and coached for 16 seasons. He coached track and field for 28 seasons. "Although his longevity is notable, his record is dazzling. His record in cross country was 131-11-1, including 10 league and two state championships. His record in track and field was 168-40-1, including seven undefeated teams, 14 league championships and one state championship. For these accomplishments he was inducted into the Connecticut Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December, 1986. Russ Devin's accomplishments are not the result of his knowledge and skills alone. He brought to the classroom and the athletic field a level of dedication of intensity, integrity, challenge and caring surpassed by very few of his profession. "Any student, whether in the classroom or on the athletic field, who was willing to meet his high level of expectation was rewarded many times over. Average students became outstanding. Average athletes became champions. "It is with sincere admiration and deepest thanks that Russell Devin is inducted into the New Milford High School Hall of Fame this 23rd day of June, 2001." Mr. Devin suffered a stroke in February of 1980, but he never let it keep him from living life. The impact from the stroke left him without the ability to speak, which he struggled to reclaim. His communication skills were never fully restored and he never regained the ability to speak the French which he had learned in early childhood from his French-Canadian parents. Although he will be sorely missed by his family, students, and the many athletes he coached, his legacy is living, and will live on. Russ, your race is over. You have finished the course. Mr. Devin is survived by three sisters, Gertrude Pinette, Connie LeTarte and Gisele Tucker; a daughter, Jeanne Devin, of Easton, Pa.; and two sons, John Devin, of Dixmont, Maine, with whom he lived for the last six years in what he called the "boonsticks" of Maine, and Steven Devin, of Quincy, Calif. Calling hours will be held Thursday, Oct. 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., in New Milford. The funeral service will held Friday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, Route 109, New Milford. The Lillis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Milford High School Booster Club, P.O. Box 361, New Milford, CT 06776.

Although it has been nearly 60 years since I was a member of Coach Devin's first cross country team, I still have fond memories of his track and cross country teams and of being a student in his Chemistry and Physics classes. Most of all he inspired us to do our best in sports and later in life.

Thirteen Seven for Mr. Devin. If you ran Cross Country track for NMHS in the early sixties you remember the gun at the starting line in front of Conn's Dairy. You ran up Park Lane, down Park Lane East to Hancock Crossbrook Road, over the hill with two bumps, up New Milford's version of Heartbreak Hill, on down Elm Street Extension and finally into the the High School athletic field for one lap around the track to the finish line and exhausted, you hoped for that time - 13:07, the goal he set for the Freshman rookie runners. You ran your heart out for the man. He was a motivator. He was strict and expected your best performance. He was "Coach Devin". He was your motivation to achieve yor personal best. He touched so many young lives, boys and girls that took his motivation and lessons in personal self respect on to achieve their best in life as he demanded on the track field. He was one of a rare breed of human beings that you simply never forget, especially when you need to reach deep inside yourself and achieve or endure. You left your mark Coach Devin. You did your part to prepare us for life and its challenges, you gave more than your share. Rest in peace Coach Devin, we are still here and prepared to strive for that "Thirteen Seven for Mr. Devin". My sincere condolences to your family. May you always know what a great man he was.

Russ was a great inspiration for me in high school and I followed his footsteps into education. He certainly made physics interesting and he encouraged women into the sciences long before it was the right thing to do.

Russ inspired without preaching, taught without being heavy handed. So many of us became better athletes, better people because Russ was there to guide us. He was extraordinary. Rest In Peace Russ Devin.

Our condolences to Mr. Devin's family! To this day, my husband Rick Fast credits Russ with saving his life during his 1970s New Milford High School years, when Russ inspired him to run and become third in the state, which meant more than his being a National Merit Scholar! Thank you Russ - we will always remember you with great awe and reverence. Love, Kevin Ricky Fast, and Mary Jane Southouse Fast.

Russ Devin I haven't seen you in decades as I graduated in 1975 and moved away. I will never forget you and the influence I believe you had on my life. You got the best out of everyone and that is a special gift. The track teams we had were exceptional and the memories of you prowling the practice field will always remain with me. Thanks for everything and rest in peace.

Mr. Devin treated us students and athletes with caring and respect. He quietly gave pointers to us girls on the fledgling girl's track team, and years later I still appreciated his calm guidance and encouragement. It is no coincidence that I now have a daughter Devin
