Joseph Schoeb Obituary

Joseph Hubert Schoeb
Born: June 10, 1934 in Dearborn, MI
Died: February 14, 2023 in Peru, IL
Joseph Hubert Schoeb, 88, of Peru, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at his home.
A prayer service will be held at 11:30 AM, Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the Mueller Funeral Home, Peru followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon at St. Joseph's Church, Peru with Rev. Gary Blake, pastor officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, River Grove at a later date. Visitation will be held 10-11:30 AM Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the funeral home.
Joseph was born June 10, 1934 in Dearborn, MI to Joseph and Ernestine (Altesleben) Schoeb. Joseph received his Master of Science degree from the University of Detroit (1958) and his Doctoral degree in Organic Chemistry from Iowa State University (1965). While attending Iowa State, he met the love of his life, Virginia Mary Rowland and they were married on June 13, 1965 in Chicago.
Joseph's professional career started after graduation where he was a professor for the University of Minnesota for five years. As a young professor with a PhD, he was recruited to become part of the growing and expanding Illinois Valley Community College Science Department. He spent the next 25 years doing what he loved best, sharing his love and knowledge of organic chemistry with the young minds of this area. He was an active member of the American Chemical Society for over 50 years and helped lead the Joliet Chapter to many awards. He was also an avid supporter of science fairs for youth at the grade school and high school levels, sharing his love for creation and exploration in the sciences.
He took the opportunity to retire early so he could enjoy his grandchildren as well as traveling the world with his wife and friends. Joining many groups with Father Ron from St. Bede Abbey, the highlight was participating in a Mass at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome as a lector. Joe loved creating. He was a carpenter, painter, and gardener. He spent many a day sculpting his yard through the seasons as well as creating furniture, art, and exotic plants for inside his home. His faith was very important to him. He was very active at St. Joseph's Church in Peru and in many roles in the Holy Name Society. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather with a kind, creative heart.
He is survived by his three children, Eileen (Mark R. Jones) Schoeb of Chicago, Patrick (Jonathan Norton) Schoeb of Chicago, and Joanne Taplin of Ridgway, CO; five grandchildren, Madeleine and Genevieve Jones and Colby, Sean, and Gregory Taplin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia on September 2, 2022; his parents; his brother, Earnest Schoeb and his sister, Madeleine Schoeb.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the 1986/1987 Versailles Alumni Scholarship Fund at the University of Illinois School of Architecture, arch.illinois.edu/alumni/donate-to-the-school-of-architecture.

To Eileen, Patrick,Joanne, Madeline, Genevieve, Colby, Sean & Gregory & yr spouses
I am so very very sorry for the loss of both Virginia & Joe. I was Virginia´s hairstylist for 20 yrs. I enjoyed their visits in the salon& at their home when I went to do her hair. We always had so much to talk about. They shared their travels to the city for holidays & their travels to Colorado to see their grandsons up
in The mountains. We could talk for hours about my interest & theirs in healthy alternatives, essential oils & new &upcoming supplements. They were very intelligent &
Loved to share so much w/ me. They were a wonderful & interesting couple. They loved their family. I deeply regret not getting in touch w/ your father after your mom passed. I´ve had a recent loss in my family & family sickness but that is no excuse. I really wanted to reach out to Joe after Virginia passed. They were so close & always together. I knew your Dad would be lost w/o your mom. Please accept my condolences. They are missed. I am so very sorry.

My heart is with all of the Schoeb extended family as you celebrate the life of your father, friend, cousin. All of his Dearborn/Detroit relatives are with you in spirit. Joe was a gentle giant- soft spoken but with a heart of gold and intelligence beyond our appreciation I’m sure. I fondly recall the days playing at Aunt Ernestine’s with our cousins. Taking a day trip to Point Pelee CA and days at Camp Dearborn. Joe will be missed but not forgotten. May you find peace in the memories.
