CLIFFORD SILVERS Obituary

Clifford Silvers, 77, of Milford, CT. Devoted husband of the late Evelyn Silvers, died at Yale New Haven Hospital on April 10th, 2017 with his family by his side. Clifford was born in the Bronx, NY on July 9th, 1939. He was the son of the late Ely and Fay (Newman) Silvers. Clifford and Evelyn were married for 56 years. Clifford was the beloved father of Stacy Carlo (Rick) of Milford and Scott Silvers (Claudia) of Stamford and cherished grandfather (Pop Pop Cliff or Pop Pop) of Megan, Arianna and Juliette and brother of Alan Silvers (Eleanor) of Holiday, Florida. Clifford was a graduate of Southern CT State University and began his teaching career in Bridgeport but after 5 years he began his long illustrious career at the CT Education Association (CEA) where he dedicated his life fighting for teachers rights in the state of CT. He participated in protests, sit-in's and his presence at the state legislature was legendary. His CEA colleagues were his second family and he continued to serve as an arbitrator subsequent to retiring in June 2004. Clifford was an avid sports fan of the NY Football Giants and the NY Mets. Nothing gave him more pleasure then a Giants Super Bowl Victory. He relished his many close friends but it was his family that he cherished the most. Funeral services will be held at Congregation Or Shalom, 205 Old Grassy Hill Rd. Orange, CT Friday April 14th at 10:30AM with interment services to follow at the Or Shalom Cemetery 80 Farwell St. West Haven, CT. A period of mourning will be observed at the home of Clifford Silvers at 180 Carmen Road Milford, CT on Saturday April 15th, 6:30PM-8:00PM. Memorial contributions may be sent to Congregation Or Shalom Orange, CT. The Robert E. Shure Funeral Home 543 George St. New Haven is in care of Arrangements. I knew Cliff primarily through CEA's Summer Leadership Conference, where we sat on panels together and helped out with mock negotiation sessions. He was a perceptive, funny, and "make no mistake about it" absolutely relentless advocate for CT educators. We will not soon see his like again.

I worked with Cliff for many years at CEA, including his brief stint in the communications department where he played an important role in the PR campaign that led to higher teacher salaries. He had a great sense of humor, but he was very tenacious when he set his mind to something. Cliff was one of the strongest advocates for Connecticut teachers who benefited greatly from his dedication to them. He was a colleague and a friend and I will miss him.

Cliff and I go back to attending Southern CT State College together. It was a long time ago and many happy memories. We enjoyed our time at CEA as colleagues and he as my boss. He was a positive influence on everyone he was around. He will be sorely missed.
My sincere condolences

Cliff and I had our hearings before the General Assembly on the same day last year. I let the committee know what a great arbitrator Cliff was.

At CEA Cliff embodied the best qualities of a manger, mentor and advocate. His respect for educational professionals and 'his staff' meant making room at times for disagree. However his greatest joys were sharing the adventures of his beloved family as they moved through life. You will be missed and God bless.

Cliff and I were managers at CEA. He was passionate about his work and a great proponent for that in which he believed. At times we fought like cats, but that did not interfere with our respect for each other. Teachers were well served by Cliff, and NEA affiliates could use more advocates like Cliff. May God grant peace to his soul and his family.

First met Cliff when I was superintendent of schools in Ridgefield. A formidable advocate for his teachers. He was a fair and honorable professional who always proved to be one of my favorites. He will be missed. Elliott Landon (Westport, CT)

I knew Cliff from the time he started at CEA and yes he made working there family and did care about the union perspective and believed in it. He was a pleasure to work with and under and afterward we stayed friends. I will miss him.

My heartfelt condolences to the Silvers/Carlo family. I know he must have been a wonderful father and grandfather. I worked with him at CEA. He had so much energy to devote to his profession; and he was SO funny!
