DANIEL COSGROVE Obituary

COSGROVE, DANIEL P. Daniel P. Cosgrove of 99 Todds Hill Rd. Branford, passed away peacefully on April 12, surrounded by loving family and friends. Daniel was born on November 19, 1917, son of James and Elizabeth O’Brien Cosgrove. He was the husband of the late Alice Brown Cosgrove and father of Daniel T. Cosgrove and Susan Cosgrove Barnes, both of Branford and Mark M. Cosgrove (Linda) of Johnson City, TN. Dan led a life full enough for several men. A prominent, respected and trusted excavation contractor for over sixty years, he built airports in Cuba, Block Island and Oxford, CT; corporate headquarters for Bayer Labs, Bristol Meyers and Ethan Allen Furniture; as well as roads and schools throughout the state. Dan’s political life was as full, active locally and statewide. He was on a first name basis with some of the most important people in Washington D.C. It was understood by most that if you needed to get something done, he was the man to see. Dan was an important piece of the effort to bring the first Hospice in the United States to Branford, helping to obtain funding, and doing the site work for the original building free of charge. He was a large contributor to the success of its present quarters in Short Beach. An autodidact with a remarkable memory, he would read himself to sleep with Shakespeare, and American and British History. He was legendary for his skills in arithmetic without benefit of paper or pencil. As a young man, he had an impressive career as a professional boxer. His crowning achievement in that arena was being inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame at age 90. Mr. Cosgrove leaves nine grandchildren: Kathleen Cosgrove of Gaithersberg, MD, Eileen, Clare and Kevin Cosgrove of Branford, James Cosgrove (wife Nicole) of Branford, Daniel Cosgrove (wife Marie) of Greenwich, Meaghan Cosgrove of New York City, Pat Barnes of Branford, Lauren Barnes of Maryland, and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother James Cosgrove Jr. and his sister Kathryn Cappiello. His family extends special thanks to the staff of CT Hospice and his aides Ampi, Troy, and Mo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11:00 at St. Mary Church in Branford. Friends are invited to go directly to church. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8 P.M. at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St. Branford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd. Branford, CT 06405. See online memorial @ www.wsclancy.com.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Mr. Cosgrove's family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
May your memories and love you shared together help you through this time. I had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful gentleman. I was a young girl starting a job after college and one of my client appointments was with Dan. He became a friend. I will never forget the first day I met him. We spoke on the phone before our appointment, he told me to him at the fuel oil office. When I arrived I was a few minutes early. I was amazed to see all the photos of him through the years, as well as the boxing photos when he was a young man, I then hear a woof, woof and a truck door slam, it was Dan with his dogs. The door opened and they all greeted me. We had a great meeting and from then on we became friends. He would always tell me how he missed his wife. He told me to remember you can have it all - money & material things- but what does it mean if you do not have the one you love. Now he and his wife are together again. Rest in piece my friend. We lost a wonderful person. God Bless, Best Regards. Regina

Dan and our father, Fritz Petela, were the closest of friends since boyhood. Dan-o, as we little twins called him, was Justine's godfather. A man of brilliant mind, upright character, and unending generosity. They broke the mold.

Heartfelt condolences to the Cosgrove family. Mr Cosgrove was a great and loyal friend to my dad Jack Borzillo. I remember my dad telling stories of Mr. Cosgrove's boxing prowess and more importantly about how much he looked up to him for his depth of character and much he valued his friendship. His was a life of service to his community and to his family and friends. A life WELL lived. Rest in peace Mr. Cosgrove.

April 13, 2016

I met Dan and his family through my husband, Joseph Trotta. He was
the most enchanting historian, beloved and loyal friend to animals and
humans, model of philanthropy, and the persona of humanity to the
magnitude second to none but with that being said respect was owed and
demanded by him even at the age of 98. I cherish he and his daughter,
Susan Cosgrove Barnes for inviting me into their family with family
dinners, with my four legged family Dommie and Roxy. Dommie (Joe's
14 year old poodle) and Dan would sit together and Dan would talk to
him and hold him hours at a time. While Joe would call every Thursday to
talk to "himself", it was at the end that Dan would talk to Dommie at
weekend meals.

We lost a great man. Tonight he is visiting with his family and his friend Joe just like they did at the truck stop talking about the good old days.
