MATTHIAS, ELLSWORTH S., SR. “BUD” Ellsworth S. “Bud” Matthias, Sr. passed away Jan. 8th, 2015 in Winter Haven, Fla. Born Jan. 30,1926 in New Haven, Conn., he graduated from Hillhouse H.S., attended Peekskill Military Academy and served in the Army Air Force during WWII. He graduated from Bradley University, serving as president of TKE Fraternity and the Inter-Fraternity council. Here he met Elaine Avis Walsh; they married and, moved to Guilford and raised a family until her death in 1989. Bud had a long career in the building business as vice president of Lamson Lumber Co and president of Kismat, lnc.; serving several terms as president of the New Haven Home Builders Assoc. He was active in local politics and served as Guilford police commissioner and selectman. An avid golfer and member of the Madison CC ,he enjoyed many friendships on the links. Bud met and married his second wife, Janet, in Bermuda in 1991. They retired to Hilton Head SC, then to Lake Ashton in Lake Wales, FL; where they cultivated wonderful new friends. Bud’s passing was sadly preceded by Janet’s sudden illness and death one week earlier. He leaves two sons: Ellsworth Jr. of Guilford, Thomas of Durango, Co.; a step daughter, Leslie of Bermuda; four grandchildren and a great grandchild. Gatherings in Bud’s memory will be held at Lake Ashton and also in Guilford.
