Joan Jauernig Obituary

Joan R. Jauernig
March 2, 1939 ~ November 1, 2024
Joan R. Jauernig, age 85, of North Branford passed away peacefully at Evergreen Woods in North Branford on November 1, 2024. She was born on March 2, 1939 to the late Virginia Richards Peterson and Ervin Richards.
Joan was predeceased by her husband Franz in 2024, son Peter Jauernig in 1973, and brother Allan (Butch) Richards. She was survived by her daughter Cynthia Jauernig (Leif Selander), her two grandchildren, Matthew Jauernig Healey of Arlington, Virginia, and Peter Jauernig Healey of Stoneham, Massachusetts.
Joan was a devoted and loving mother to Cynthia and Peter Jauernig. The joys of her life were her grandsons Matthew and Peter, whom she adored, was immensely proud of, and loved unconditionally. Mimi was always there for them and her eyes sparkled and she smiled endlessly when she spoke of them.
Joan attended Connecticut Teacher's College (now known as SCSU) where she received her B.S. in teaching, a Master's degree in Speech and Language and a Sixth Year Degree in Intermediate Administration and Supervision.
Joan began her teaching career in East Haven at the Highland Elementary School and went on to become an accomplished Administrator with the East Haven Public School System, serving as the Head of the Speech and Language Department for many years until her retirement. Joan was highly regarded and respected in the field of education for her level of expertise and dedication. Her knowledge of child development and speech and language development spearheaded the birth of the IDA (Infant Development Assessment) and Reading Readiness Programs in East Haven as well as the system wide Pre-Kindergarten Screening for children with developmental delays. Joan was well read and versed in all aspects of education and life. She maintained high expectations for herself and those who worked with her. She will be remembered as an impactful educator and colleague, as well as a loyal and trusting friend. Her passing has left an immense void in the hearts of all who loved and adored her.
Her summers were filled with travel across the United States to historic landmarks with her family. Later in life summers were spent at her and Franz's camp in Oquossoc, Maine. Where they relished in the beauty of nature making memories with their family and friends on Rangeley Lake.
Joan was also a die-hard UCONN basketball fan for both the men and women. As well as having a passion for horse racing.
Also want to thank the Evergreen Woods health center staff for taking such good care of Joan over the years.
Family and friends may visit Keenan Funeral Home, Saturday, November 16, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a Blessing at 2 p.m.

Sincere condolences to Joan's family. I worked with Joan in East Haven schools as a special education teacher. She was always so pleasant and helpful as I was starting out in my teaching career .
