I enjoyed our correspondence over the years and loved to hear her stories about what her beautiful shepherds were getting in to. I had the pleasure of visiting with her at her farm while we packed up her latest book at the time and shipped them out to various sellers around the area and country. We´d sit in the gazebo and drink lemonade when we got the orders out. She was down to earth, quirky and brilliant.

My family worked at the Lodge in the late fifties; early sixties. I remember as a young girl, Ann taking up time with me in her spare time. My fondest memories were when we would go horse back riding at the lodge. I never forgot her over the years. May she R.I.P

It was Woodswoman that reinforced what I was becoming in 1980. I eventually became a (rock climbing) guide and lived my life in an outdoor career for 20 years. I work in an office now but that won't be my last chapter. I will end my career in some wild place, without the comforts of suburbia. Thank you Anne for being the siren that you are.

How I remember the hours and days spent with you condor and Chikeeka in Wadhams NY. Swimming in your back yard pond, working in the garden and the list goes on. You showed me outdoor survival and I showed you modern domestication. I still sing the song I wrote for you ( beyond black bear lake) with a tear in my eye, the poem you wrote about the wind hitting our chests as we motored across lake Champlain our picture in the boat on the back of your book, sitting on your back porch eating cream cheese and wild flower sandwiches. And the list goes on. I was honored when you took my words ( iron butterfly) in your writings about Rodney. You will be forever be in my thoughts and especially when I work around my own home in the woods. Thank you for instilling a part of you in me.

I stumbled upon Anne LaBastille when i was in my adolescent years in the 70's . She embodied the mentor/ heroine model i needed as a young budding woman. I was so inspired by her that i wrote her a letter . I don't even remember what it was i said, but to my surprise she wrote me back! She encouraged me to be myself and to go for my dreams . I hope to some day find that letter in all my memorabilia . I am now 55 years old and i still have that young girl inside of me that reminds me to stay true to my life and to aspire to be a strong. independent woman like Anne LaBastille.
My 19 year old son's girlfriend is graduating from high school this week. I thought what could i give to this young budding woman that would be meaningful ? Anne came to mind. I bought her a copy (and one for myself again) and will present it to her tomorrow after she graduates. I was sorry to hear that Anne had passed a few years back. Her legacy will forever live within me and now i pass it on to my young woman friend in hopes that it will inspire her...
Rest in peace Anne. Thank You for being You.

I just found her book Woodswoman at the town dump,,,part of which they have a table of used books..it is signed by her(I think) I have not read since I found my daughter after 15yrs due to divorce. But when I put my hands on this book it brought childhood memories of time spent with my parents in the Adirondack's. I liked her discovery of nature and her description of every living thing and it's connection to each other, as I too as a child would take refuge in the deep woods around our house. I am thrilled that I found her book which brought me to read again. I will read all her books. She is a great inspiration to all who seek solitude in the forest. God our creator has not abandoned her. Penny Miller Vermont

I was lucky enough to acquire a cabin on Twitchell Lake while Anne was still there. Since we also had German Shepherds we became good friends. She even performed a memorial service for one of our dogs who died of old age at our camp and is buried there. We would often arrive at camp and find flowers or other mementos on Kira's grave and know that Anne had stopped by. Along with a few of her other close friends, I had the honor and pleasure of bringing her back to Twitchell Lake and her cabin one last time, for a week, the summer before she died. The ravages of dementia compromised her abilities to function fully so she stayed at my camp but we spent every day at her cabin and the camps of her dear long-time friends. After she died, we held a wonderful memorial service for her at the public landing of Twitchell Lake, with her last dog Krispy Kreme, that hundreds of people attended. We brought her ashes back to her camp in an Adirondack pack basket and buried her near her cabin and dog's graves at an unmarked site that only a handful of us know about. Thought her admirers might find comfort in knowing that she will remain forever in the place that so inspired and influenced her life. John Deasy, 13 Twitchell Lake

Anne: I have read all of your Woodswoman books, and I had the pleasure of corresponding with you. You were even nice enough to have me send you Book IIII, and you autographed it for me. How you were with your mountains and dogs, is how I am with my love for the mountains, and my dogs. You had German Shephards, and I had Labs. I was so saddened to learn of your death. I kept your letters. I hope you are in Heaven with God and all of your loving animals. I hope whoever got your last dog and cats took great care of them. Again, rest in peace Anne. You were a "mountain" of a woman, and I respected you so much.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Anne. I have read most all her books and the Woodswoman series lives in my heart. I am currently working on my graduate degree in ecology (late in my life) and often think of how she inspires me. I also have often thought that I would so much like to communicate with her and ask her advice but I never took those bold steps and now the chance is gone. I will miss not being able to look forward to the hope of a new book from her. God Bless her as she sure was a blessing to nature and all who love nature.

I got to know Anne when she came to Watertown to give a lecture in the mid eighties. We wrote back and forth for quite a long time. She was the epitome of the woman I wished I could be. Through her inspiration my love for the Adirondacks grew. When I became principal of the small Catholic School in my hometown of Au Sable Forks, I established a hiking program where each class went on a hike based on their abilities. She will be sorely missed in the Adirondacks!

I consider myself lucky and blessed that I got to meet my idol, Anne LaBastille, and for the fact that she responded to my letters over the years. A generous lady. I found her Woodswoman book when I had this idea to live in a cabin in the woods so I went to the library to research how to do just that. Lo and behold, there was a person - a woman- that had already done this, and wrote about it! What an inspiration. Loved her. Anne was an inspiring acquaintance who lived in Inlet in the early '70's while recovering from a broken ankle she received while doing some early morning photography in the Moose River Plains. She managed to slide off a vehicle, slippery from the morning dew, while taking photos of geese. Oh, what great stories we shared that winter! Adios friend, I'm sure Pitzi is waiting for hugs.

To Anne's family and friends,
May God bless you with His comfort and peace.
Thank you for sharing Anne with all of us. She had many gifts and talents and used them wisely. Her accomplishments will burn brightly into the future, and her inspiration will light many more hearts. And so will she live on.
I was first touched by Anne through her Woodswoman books, a couple years after discovering there really was life outside the office - in the outdoors. I was quite fortunate to meet her when she spoke at Finger Lakes Community College several years ago. Anne influenced my life in many ways, including my decision to adopt a German Shepherd.
