Calvin Callais Obituary

On Thursday October 12, 2023, Calvin Edville Callais, age 95, died peacefully in his home, surrounded by loved ones. Calvin was born in Cutoff, Louisiana on January 16, 1928. He was a resident of St.Bernard Parish and St.Tammany Parish. Calvin proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. Calvin was a man of many accomplishments including public service in St Bernard Parish. Calvin was elected St Bernard Democratic Executive Committee in 1959, St Bernard Parish School Board (12 yrs), Justice of The Peace (8 yrs), President of Justice Of The Peace and Constables Association of St Bernard Parish, St Bernard Councilman, District A (4 yrs). He was a strong union member and retired from South Central Bell Telephone. He was union president of Communication Workers of America, local chapter serving New Orleans and surrounding parishes. Calvin was a devoted catholic and served as an usher at St. Roberts Bellarmine church in Arabi and later a dedicated parishioner at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Pearl River. Calvin loved gardening, traveling, Saints football and of course all LSU sports. He was at every one of his children's ball games, school plays and recitals. Calvin was always there to help others when in need. His greatest achievement was marrying his beloved wife, Shirley. They were married for 72 years and madly in love until his last breath. Calvin is survived by his six children: Denise Jobe (Charlie), Kevin Callais (Angela), Darryl Callais (Becky), David Callais (Jennie), Karen Glennon (Billy) and Kim Tassin (Michael). He is also survived by his sister Betty Birdsall, 10-grandchildren: Kevin, Kirsten, Damien, Melissa, Jennifer, Tara, Lily, Michael, Victoria, step-granddaughter Sarah, and 13-great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Shirley Wagner Callais, parents, Edville Callais, Oceana Guidry Callais and siblings Roland Callais, Irwin (Venue) Callais and step-grand daughter Harper Close. The family would like to thank. Compassus Hospices and caregiver Doris Stuart Woods-Carriere for the love and support they provided. The family will welcome friends Thursday, October 19 at St. Peter and Paul's Church, 66192 St. Mary Drive, Pearl River, Louisiana. Visitation from 10:30am - 12:30 with mass following. Private internment will be Friday, October 20 at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 34888 Grantham College Dr, Slidell, LA.
