Daniel Levy Obituary

Dan Levy, better known as "Pops" to his family, the patriarch of Bucktown's large Levy Family, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 31, 2014, at his Metairie home after a brief battle with cancer. He was 89 years old. Dan is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Shirley Raphael Levy, his eleven children, Jaqueline Levy Hughes (Vic), Daniel Casey Levy, Patrick Levy Sr. (Patrice), Michael Levy Sr. (Darnelle), Kathy Levy Cusimano (Chuck), Peggy Levy Serio (Rick), Shirley Levy Dupre (Arthur), Timothy Levy Sr. (Betsy), Terri Levy Owens (Jim), Dana Levy Naccari (Jay), Marie Levy Pechon (Paul), fifty-two grandchildren, forty-five great grandchildren with five more on the way, as well as his sisters, Clare Levy Caballero (Ralph Putsy) and Jackie Levy Caballero of New Orleans. Dan & Shirley settled in Bucktown in 1956 and have lived there ever since. Born to Dan Sr & Clare Casey Levy, Dan grew up in Sacred Heart Church Parish on Canal St. in Mid-City New Orleans and attended Jesuit High School, Marion Military Institute, LSU, the United States Military Academy at West Point, and Columbia University in New York. After serving in post-WWII Germany, Dan & Shirley returned to West Point where he was a Mathematics Instructor & Assistant Baseball & Soccer coach. In 1956, after news of their soon to be born sixth child, the couple moved back home to New Orleans where Dan joined his father's business of operating clubs and restaurants on world famous Bourbon Street. Through the years their clubs were home to many of the city's great musicians including Al Hirt and Pete Fountain. Their clubs included Dan's Pier 600, The Al Hirt Club, and The Old Absinthe Bar. Dan's International Settlement was the first Chinese restaurant in the City of New Orleans and was a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Dan was appointed by Mayor Moon Landrieu to serve on the Vieux Carre Commission in the early 1970's and was a charter member of the Krewe of Bacchus. Dan was a devoted and active parishioner of St. Louis King of France Parish where he served in almost every imaginable leadership and volunteer position and was a personal confidant and advisor over the years to the many priests who served the parish. For more than 50 years, Dan's Bucktown home was open to all, and "Pops" made sure no one ever left a stranger. Dan's real pleasure was derived from the many family gatherings at his Bucktown home. His large backyard was often the host of hotly contested volleyball games, touch football, cabbage ball, jail break, hide and go seek, and crawfish boils. Until the time of his cancer diagnosis, he was still able to maintain his large yard and find "great buys" to share with his family during his daily trips to Dorignacs. Dan's long, loving journey through life will forever be cherished by all who knew him. His family is eternally grateful for the loving, compassionate care given to him by his nurses, Laurie and Jeanine, from Passages Hospice. Funeral services are set for Friday, April 4th at St. Louis King of France Church, 1609 Carrollton Ave., Metairie, LA 70005 in Bucktown. Visitation 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. followed by the Catholic Mass of Burial. A celebration of Dan's life will be held 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. at The Cannery, 3803 Toulouse Street. I am thinking of your family today. I did not know your grandfather, but have enjoyed learning about him and your extended family in my recent work researching the history of our school and church parish (St. Louis King of France).

I am sending lots of prayers to you and yours today.

I know Mr Dan left the entire family with a since of humor: that being said if those football games were "touch", how is it that I always ended up in the hospital ? Can't think about Mr. Dan without smiling.

The loss of someone so close is difficult to bear. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

"God saw that Daniel was getting tired,
And a cure was not to be,
So He put his arms around Daniel,
And whispered, “Come to Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched,
And saw him pass away.
Although we loved our Pops dearly,
We could not make him stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
And hard working hands are at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove,
That He only takes the best."

Joel Daste- I only knew him in his very much older age and even then he was so much fun and real pleasure to talk to. I certainly remember the family days and how much joy he brought to many!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
