Dionysius Simopoulos Obituary

Dionysius (Dennis) Simopoulos, an expert on the cosmos, author, illustrator, show creator, commentator, LSU graduate, and former Baton Rouge resident, died August 7, 2022 at his home in Athens, Greece after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. Dennis came to the United States by ship in the early 1960s with the aim of attending LSU. He landed in New York and traveled by bus to Baton Rouge. He sought and found work to earn tuition and fees, since the trip exhausted his funds. He became well-known on campus, speaking often at "Free Speech Alley" and in formal debates. He was prominent in the LSU Union and married the Program Director, Karen Peterson. He ran for Student Body President in 1966, but finished second. He earned multiple degrees from LSU and became director of the Baton Rouge Planetarium. He left Baton Rouge to become the director of the Athens Planetarium, which he developed into a popular tourist attraction and educational center. He created stunning shows, mixing a study of the stars with Greek mythology. He became a sought-after commentator on the universe, space travel events, and telescopic discoveries. After retiring, he became a prolific author, mixing facts about space with amazing space photos and other illustrations. He continued as a lecturer and television commentator. His books and appearances made him well-known in Greece and his death has brought a multitude of accolades. Dennis died surrounded by family--Karen and the children, Eleni, Panos and Billy. Many others were there in spirit. LSU can be proud of its graduate, and so can Baton Rouge. His many friends in the United States will miss him greatly.

It is one of the great blessings of our life to have known Dennis and his wife Karen, the couple that introduced and brought together my parents at LSU so many years ago. There are so many incredible memories of the times that we got to see Dennis, both when he visited Baton Rouge and when we traveled to Greece. We´ll always remember him as a kind, compassionate, generous, and lively soul.....and nobody ever quite made my parents laugh the way that Dennis did. He had a natural talent for it. Dennis will be missed but loved forever by so many. Farewell from all of us.

Dennis,
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the love you have shown our family all of these years. Over 50 years ago, you and Karen introduced another young man from Greece to another girl from Nebraska. Two sons and five grandchildren later, the Plakidas family is forever grateful for your love and that of your wonderful family. Rest In Peace, with all our love, dear friend.

As a young student in an astronomy summer course he taught at the Baton Rouge LASC Planetarium 50 years ago, I still remember Dennis Simopoulos as one of the most gifted teachers I ever had the privilege of knowing. His passion for teaching and patience with young hyperactive kids was amazing. He will always be a legend, and greatly missed in this universe.

What I forgot to say was that a big part of his gift was a chance for our children, who were sort of alone at school, to finally be able to meet their counterparts from across the city.
My husband checked out the class, and reported,
"It looks like a nest of owls - they all are wearing glasses." That was all the reassurance I needed.

Back in the late 60's, Mr. Simopoulos WAS the "Gifted and Talented" program for students in Baton Rouge.
His summer Astronomy classes at the Planetarium sustained many young science "geeks" needing challenges.
He taught his students to write college-grade papers on assigned topics, how to program planetarium shows,
and to accept that it would be nearly impossible to ever get a job as an astronomer.
We parents were so grateful for his rigor, his passion, and the encouragement he gave our children.
We mourned his return to Athens, but knew he would continue to flourish back home.
God bless him and his family. Thanks Dennis, for the gift of your time and care.
