Dear Hampton Family,

As we all know, Mr. Hamp was the heart of St. Augustine High School and he brought soul to our education and teenage years. The testimonials that I have just read are but the tip of the ice berg in telling our story. I am a proud Purple Knight from the Class of 1974. When I entered the 9th grade in 1969, my trumpet playing skills were so weak that I only made the band as an “alternate”. It was well into the season before I actually got on the field for a halftime show. I didn’t even have a full uniform before that. By the time I graduated in 1974, not only had I grown up a lot, I was the trumpet section leader and 1st trumpet in the Jazz Band. I owe so much to Edwin Harrell Hampton, Lawrence Winchester and Carl Blouin. I would not be the man I am today without them. I live my life as a gainfully employed professional church musician. I am so grateful. None of this would have happened without Mr. Hamp’s guidance, concern, love and respect. Whenever I visited the school or ran into him at Corpus Christi Church, he treated me like I had only left his care just yesterday. Thank you, Hampton family. Thank you for sharing your husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, cousin and good friend with us. Mine is just one of many stories of boys who became men and maintained their love and dedication to art and craft of music—be it professionally or as an amateur. Mr. Hampton was a role model supreme and extraordinaire. As we all age and some of our pillars and icons begin to take their places among the ancestors, it just underscores the need for us to carry the banner high.

Wow. It's the closest word I come up with - but there really is no word on this great Earth to describe Mr. Edwin H. Hampton...My director, my teacher, my leader, my inspiration.

It's truly amazing that a man could have a heart so big, a love so strong, a mind so wise that he could be this and more to thousands of young African-American men.

Mr. Hampton you continue to teach and influence even in your death. As I reflected upon your life and your eternal dedication to St. Augustine High School, the Josephites, and most importantly your Purple Knight family - through numerous administrations, staff and policy changes, changes in society - you are truly and inspiration.

Fellow Purple Knights and fans of the "Marching 100", its leader, and all of its ensembles let us stand for Mr. Hampton...let us remember and thank him the way he would want us to - by supporting St. Augustine High School. He gave his life to this entity - let's make sure it continues on.

July 25, 2009

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To Prof: Mr. Edwin Hampton and Family:
I write this in deep sorry on your passing, you were a light in my life were there was darkness. You turn a “D” student into a “B” student and in college I found myself on the Dean List.

I march in your band from 1962-1966, and became your Drum Major in ’65-66. Marching with you down the streets of New Orleans, La; as the first Black Band to do so; I was in tears. You walk up to me and asked why you are crying. My answer, I don’t know no black school has ever done this we are a FIRST. Your answer: Yes, but we will not be the last!

After that I went to Grambling State U., again, at 19 years of age I am Drum Major and performing in the First Super Bowl, and there after ever weekend I am in a new city, state performing in front of thousands. This would not have happen if not for you. Prof: you turn a lost boy into a man; and I do not have the WORDS to THANK YOU!

On Tuesday, I had a restless, uneasy feeling all day…like something in my life was wrong. Yet, it was a sunny, beautifully blessed day, but still all was not right.

I went through the day and had an equally restless night. Still I could not figure out what was the matter. I asked the Lord to help me quiet my spirit.

The next morning, I awakened to urgent texts to call my brothers. Immediately, I knew something was wrong.

They wanted to tell me that Hamp was gone. I knew then what the feeling of loss was all day the day before. My friend, my mentor, my “father” was gone.

All sense of time passed away. I was taken back in my memories to days long ago in New Orleans when I first met him and he took care of me, provided for me, protected me and loved me. He taught me what self-worth meant. He taught me the definition of beauty. He taught me the definition of love. He taught me how to forgive. He taught me how to love again.

Then, he let me go so that I could find myself in this world. And, I always knew that he was only a phone call away..that no distance was too great for his love for me to travel.

It was always just me and him…I didn’t want the world to intrude on what I had found. He understood.

Now, I wish I had been unselfish and shared him with others so that they could understand just what it is he meant to me.

That day of loneliness that I just couldn’t describe was the day that he ascended into Heaven to be with the Father. He was saying goodbye.

Though I have to endure the heartache now, I know that he will forever be in my heart and soul. I thank God for the years that I had with him. I was very blessed to have had him be a part of my life.

Goodbye, Daddy Hamp

Mr. Hampton was the heart and soul of St. Aug. You can't speak of that school with out asking about him!. By using music, Mr. Hampton taught boys to be men with respect, honor and intergrity. No matter what you do , where you are and what your dreams you dream of Mr Hampton in someway had left a lasting impression in your life to pursue them. When in practice, if he states "walk backwards to me pal" you knew you mess up !!! Mr.Hamp I deeply with all my heart and soul appreciated you and you and your family have my blessing!!! and Thank You !!!!!

YOUTH CORP. INTERNATIONAL Blog
EDWIN HAMPTON , MY MENTOR, COACH, & MY HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER& MY FRIEND
MR. EDWIN HAMPTON, WAS LIKE A PRECISE DRILL INSTRUCTOR, LIKE A DOCTOR OF MUSIC,
WE WERE TOGETHER WHEN WE BOTH WERE HONORED AT THE ROSE BOWL PARADE , A FEW YEARS AGO IN SOUTHERN SUNNY CALIFORNIA,

HE WAS A MAN WHO HAS A HEART AS BIG AS HIS MARCHING 100 WHICH HE FOUNDED, THE BEST BAND IN THE LAND,
HE WAS QUITE CARING
, LOVED TO SHARE, AND HAD A JOYOUS LOUD LAUGH,
When he saw something wrong, he would let you know about it, I remember a few times during practice, Iwas in the CHORUS AT THE SCHOOL, AND WE VISITED HIS CLASS,
AND HE THREW HIS BATON IN THE CLASS AT A MOMEN'TS NOTICE IN FRONT OF THE CLASS TO GET A STUDENT'S ATTENTION WHO WASN'T IN TUNE WITH WHAT WAS GOING ON IN CLASS
, YOU MIGHT CALL IT CHIT CHAT,

ALTHOUGH HE DID SPEND MUCH OF HIS TIME WITH HIS STUDENTS,
AND MANY TIMES AFTER BAND PRACTICE YOU CAN SEE HIM WITH A STUDENT HELPING THEM WITH THEIR TROMBONE, NOTE, OR DRUM ROLL, OR TUBA, CLARINET , FLUTE IT DIDN'T MATTER, AND IT ALSO DIDN'T MATTER HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE FOR THE STUDENT TO GET IT RIGHT,

I WILL REALLY MISS HIM, SO SHOULD ANYONE STILL HAVE THE FOOTAGE OF THE ST. AUG MARCHING 100 BAND WITH COACH EDDIE, EDWIN HAMPTON MARCHING IN THE STREETs OF PASADENA WITH THE BAND PLEASE FORWARD IT TO ME SO I CAN POST IT ON OUR PINMANWORLD TRIBUTE STARTING LOCALLY AND CONTINUING GLOBALLY,,

, THE BAND HAS ALSO BEEN IN QUITE A FEW MOVIES AS WELL, AND WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN GETTING NEW ORLEANS BACK ON ITS FEET AFTER, KATRINA, AND HAS PLAYED AT MANY, MANY NFL SAINTS AND COLLEGE GAMES

"YES I'M SUPER PROUD TO BE A PURPLE KNIGHT
,
THIS YR NEXT MONTH WOULD HAVE BEEN OUR 30TH YR CLASS REUNION THE MARCHING 100 HAS ALSO BEEN IN SEVERAL MOVIES AS WELL
,
EDWIN HAMPTON INSPIRED TERRANCE BLANCHARD TO MUSIC EXCELLENCE, WHO WRITES A LOT OF MUSIC FOR SPIKE LEE,
EDWIN HAMPTON KEPT THE FIRE BURNING WITH MENTORING WYNTON MARSAILIS,
AND VICTOR GOINGS AND SO MANY OTHERS TOO COUNTLESS TO MENTION.

HE IS INDEED A MUSIC LEGEND, AND I WILL MISS HIS CONCENTRATED STARE, AND PERFECTIONIST INSTRUCTION TO GET IT RIGHT NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TOOK,

BROTHER EDWIN IT SEEMS GOD HAS ANOTHER ASSIGNMENT FOR YOU IN THE HEAVENS, NOW YOU CAN DIRECT ALL OF THE BANDS OF MUSIC FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE
AND GOD'S GLORY, I GIVE A SOUNDING TRUMPET, DRUM ROLL AND A LOUD TEAR DROP FOR YOU PASSING OUR WAY

WISHING YOU AND THE FAMILY EXTENDED AND LOCAL THE VERY BEAST I WILL CONTINUOUSLY CARRY YOUR MENTORING, NOT HURRYING SPIRIT BEING THER FOR THE YOUTH WHERE EVER I GO

ITS QUITE INTERESTING YOU AND WALTER CRONKITE DECIDED TO MEET UP IN HEAVEN THIS MONTH, OK GODD WHAT ARE YOU PLANNINNG NEXT , RECORDING A NEW ORLEANS MARCHING 100 BAND SYMPHONY WITH THATS THE WAY IT WAS ON JULY21ST, 2009

MAY GOD BLESS YOU IN ALL OF YOUR ENDEAVORS .
