Vanessa, words can't express the pain I'm feeling right now. Bouncer was like another son to me and a brother to Ronald and Kenden. His smile, his eyes and that humorous personality always gave me joy. I know your pain is GREAT but always know that my family and I are here and he will remain in our hearts and memories forever. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I am writing to offer my heartfelt condolences on the loss of Gregory. I am mailing you Gregory’s last assignment submitted to me Friday April 30th after he delivered his ceremonial speech in our Public Speaking course here at Southern University at New Orleans. I believe it shows just how far Gregory progressed during the semester. I am also mailing a card signed by all of his classmates. I apologize that I cannot attend his service in person.
Gregory joined my class and showed immediately how bright and charismatic he was. He led the class naturally and without effort. Gregory struggled to find his footing in the course, however, and sought me out in office hours. He performed every extra credit opportunity and though many of his classmates never saw the extra effort, he was a constant communicator: emailing, tweeting, and instant messaging asking what else he could do in the course. However, he was not known for serious effort on his speeches and he generally did things his own way with little regard for assignment requirements. Telling him once, “Gregory, put the time into this class and take it seriously—it will help you.” I won’t lie, he pushed every nerve I had as a teacher and did so with gusto. However, I told my husband at midterms that he was the brightest kid I had this semester and the frustrating thing was that he wasn’t working at his potential. His own path in the course, I’m certain, was merely a sign of his creative and energetic wit – and his desire to keep the class laughing, coupled with his independent spirit.
This jovial trend in his speeches stopped after he and I spoke before his ceremonial speech, the last speech of the semester. He said, “I get it, Doc!” and was excited to deliver his speech. Well, he surprised everyone with one of the most touching speeches I’ve heard in years. He spoke on his decision to be baptized, his church, and the moment he looked in his mother’s eyes and knew how proud he had made her. The way he verbalized the moment he saw himself differently through his mother’s eyes was extremely powerful and emotional. I think we all saw a part of Gregory he kept hidden from the class that day. Everyone was moved. As he came by the office that afternoon and saw the “A” clearly marked on top of his paper, he handed me the journal – which I am mailing to you. The journal is a reflection on the speaking process that each student writes after every speaking assignment. He told me, “Doc, I want to feel the audience with me like they were today. They didn’t laugh at me, they really heard me, you know?” This was the last time I saw Gregory, eager and excited by the work he’d done, proud of his grade, energized by the impact his words had, and surprised by the power of his own voice.
It was a true honor working with Gregory this semester. He challenged me, amazed me, and moved me. We were all shocked by the news of his death and I hope this letter, his journal, and the card from the students shows you just how much Gregory touched our lives and how much we will all miss him.
Thank you for sharing Gregory with us this semester. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family.
