I miss John
John C. Sullivan, Jr.
July 16, 2014
It was my great privilege to know Gentleman John. I was his brother-in-law.
His father was also a gentleman, a prince of a man, and John learned those principles well and practiced them daily. But you all know that.
Gentleman John was certainly adored by his family and especially his gracious wife, Anne, and the apple of his eye, his daughter, Anne Elise. He was especially admired by his nephew, John Allen Yarborough of Texas, and his musical talents are now being emulated by John Allen's son, Jon. Gentleman John also maintained a very close and loving relationship with his younger sister, Bettye Yarborough Sullivan, of Jackson, Mississippi, as she did with him.
Gentleman John taught me a great deal and introduced me to his love of blue water Big Game Fishing. As his guest at a New Orleans Big Game Fishing Club tournament, I was elated to capture my very first big Blue Marlin with him, Anne, and Bettye in the Gulf Stream on July 4, 1976. That was the 200th Anniversary of our Nation's Independence. Just moments later, Bettye caught a beautiful White Marlin, and the both of us were “hooked.”
Gentleman John also trumped most anglers in this world when he subdued a huge “Grande” Black Marlin off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia weighing over 1000 lbs. Now that was a fantastic feat reflecting his fishing skill and sheer physical endurance. That was a giant leap in the life of an angler who began as a young lad catching catfish out of an old wooden boat in the deep holes at the bottom of the Big Black River where he grew up in the rural town of Pickens, Mississippi.
What a Man! What a Gentleman in the truest meaning of that word. Truly he shall be missed.
Adieu, Gentleman John.
With love and affection.

I truly believe there are certain of God's Angels that walk this earth, and that sweet Dr. Yarbrough was one of them. He administered to our needs through his God-given talents of healing hands, he soothed and lifted our hearts and souls through his angelic music, and he ministered the message of God's grace through his warm smile, his peaceful, kind spirit, and, his love for everyone; and, he was loved by everyone that met him. He was a beacon of goodness and all that it represents. I served the board of trustees at Baptist Community Ministries before Katrina, and upon my first meeting of Dr. Yarbrough, I knew he was someone very special. He literally adored Ann, and deeply loved Ann-Elise and the rest of his family. I am so thankful to have visited with him in Jackson since Katrina, and I am deeply saddened at the loss of this sweet, sweet man, whom I consider to be one of the worldly Angels, who is now with the Lord. He made such a huge impact on so many lives, and this world will not be the same without him in it. Words cannot describe how much he was loved by all and how greatly he will be missed.
Warm regards and deepest sympathy to Ann, Ann-Elise, and family.

Ann, Jim and I have missed seeing you and John. The moments we had were very special for us. You both were gracious and so interesting. John had that wonderful smile and overwhelming kindness as well as his superior talents in music, dermatology surgery and leadership.
Ann-Elise and Rachel were always spoken of with a twinkle in his eye and great pride. I hope they will carry on his love and kindness in their lives .
John will be leading the symphony if not playing with the choirs above.
Thanks for the laughs and memories we shared. Jim and Mary Nordlund

I am so very sorry to learn of John's death. I have known him since I was a very young child. One of my favorite parts of the worship services at St. Charles Avenue Baptist were the glorious musical performances John provided every Sunday morning. He played the organ better than anyone else I have ever heard. He was also my late parents friend and dermatologist for many years and I am sure he will be missed by many. I know that the choir in Heaven rejoiced when John arrived to play the organ as they sang. I send my sincere condolences to his entire family and his many friends.

I am so sad to hear of this. The Yarboroughs lived next door to me as a child, and "Dr. Yarborough" was always so full of vitality and warmth and had a way of making one feel like he was happy they were there!
Ann-Elise was my first "baby"- how I loved her! And how her daddy doted on her! I had never heard of Neiman Marcus before he brought her home a dress from there. ( I remember how they had her saying "Neiman Mo-cus")
Ann and Ann-Elise, I am so very sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and in my prayers.
With love,

Dear Ann, so sad to learn of John's passing. My deepest sympathy to you and the family. I have many fond memories of John at the keyboard during opera functions. We are told that we are not given burdens that are greater than we can bear. I know the burden seems unbearable now, but I assure you, from my own experience, that it will become easier with the passage of time. Just take one step at a time and one day at a time. Your friends and your family are there to support and comfort you.

I lived a block down Audubon Street years ago and even though I never really knew Dr. Yarborough, the few times I met him passing by, he was very warm and genial to me but one thing I will never forget was the most wonderful piano music emanating from his grand house on many an occasion. I used to stop in front of there and just listen to what seemed like an impromptu symphony going on and would think to myself what terrifically wonderfully talented neighbors I'm surrounded with and John was at the top of my list. God bless him and may he be playing in the Paradise orchestra right now.

Dear Ann-Elise, I am so sad, I will treasure my memories of your father as he was a wonderful kind soul who took great care of me as a patient and later a mentor as I wrote some grants for a non-profit. I know sorry doesn't cut it, but I will miss him dearly and know what the feelings you are going through. My thoughts are with you and your family.

My wife and I are saddened by John Yarborough's death. As former principal oboist when the LPO was called the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra, I remember very clearly the 1982 European tour of our orchestra under Phillippe Entremont when John had the dual role as orchestra physician and organ soloist in the St.Saens Organ Symphony. He was a wonderful, friendly person and fine musician and he will always be remembered.
