Melvyn Kossover Obituary

Melvyn F. Kossover, M.D. passed away on December 31, 2020 in New Orleans due to complications of Parkinson's disease. His remains were donated for medical research. He was born on September 6, 1933 in Little Rock, Arkansas to the late Max and Dora Kossover. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy Kossover, and their children Marc (Laura Branagan) Kossover of San Francisco, CA, and Kathy (Bobby) Breffle of Hartwell, GA. Mel graduated from Tulane University undergraduate and Tulane University School of Medicine. He was in private practice for Internal Medicine and Diabetology from 1964-1998, then limited his practice to Diabetes Management until he retired in 2010. Judy Kossover joined his practice in 1983 as a diabetes educator. In addition, he was a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Medicine at LSU Health Science Center. He was very active in many professional and civic organizations including American Diabetes Association (New Orleans chapter and Louisiana State chapter past president), Touro Infirmary, Congregation Temple Sinai (Brotherhood past president), and French Quarter Citizens, Inc. Mel remained an integral part of his community until the end, being a member of the Steamboat Club, Prime Timers, The Friday Night Before Mardi Gras, royalty with The Fat Monday Luncheon, and other local organizations. Due to COVID restrictions, there will be no memorial service at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mel's memory may be made to Congregation Temple Sinai or the charity of your choice.

Ms Judy!
Our(Ms Ruby & Willette) hearts were saddened by the news of Dr. Mel's passing. My mom worked for Drs. Sternberg & Kossover for over 35+ years and during that time I was apart of the Prytania Suite Location Family. We enjoyed the Christmas parties especially when Dr Mel played the piano and sang funny songs about the workers. He will be missed but his memories shall ALWAYS be in the hearts he touched.May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. We send our love and our deepest sympathy to you and the entire Kossover Family!

Hi Judy and Kossover family,
Gary and I were very saddened to hear about Dr. Kossover's passing. We know you all have not had it easy for a long time. As you know, I remember everyone, not only as his patient in his last years of practice, but for the many years of office parties, etc. when I got to be with the family. He will be missed, I know as Dad's resident, then partner, and friend for so many years. Judy, you have, also, been by the doctor's side through many joys and difficult years. You are, also, missed as a friend and important co-worker with Dad and your husband. Please, continue to keep in touch with our family and know that you and yours are sent our deepest condolences and wishes for strength.
Love,
Laurie (Sternberg) and Gary Breen
