Omer McDonnell Obituary

McDONNELL Omer Sinnott (Mac) McDonnell, age 81, died peacefully at his home in Metairie, surrounded by his loving family on July 11, 2008. He was born on November 4, 1926 in New Orleans and graduated from Warren Easton High School. He also attended Tulane University before being drafted into the military. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II. He was employed by Lykes Brothers Steamship Company where he retired after thirty-seven years as assistant vice-president of the Traffic Division. Mac enjoyed spending time with his family and loved to attend all sporting events. He was as avid fan and supporter of the Tulane Green Wave. Mr. McDonnell was preceded in death by his parents, Frank C. and Veronica McDonnell and his brother, Frank V. McDonnell. He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Shirley Cattan McDonnell. He is also survived by his five children, Kathleen McDonnell Aparicio, Frank McDonnell, Gary McDonnell, Michele McDonnell Rossignol, Patricia McDonnell Houser; eight grandchildren, Cherie A. McDermott, Stephen Altobello, Tricia M. Lara, Randy and Erica Rossignol, Anthony LaCava, Cole and Jacob Houser and three great-grandchildren, Krista and Joshua Lara and Isabelle McDermott. Visitation for friends and relatives will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, July 16, 2008. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
