Stanley McDermott Obituary

On January 3, 2014, Stanley McDermott, Jr. passed away at the age of 84 after a short and courageous struggle with cancer. A man of gentle heart, keen mind, and generous spirit, he will be greatly missed. The beloved husband of Elizabeth Nairne McDemott of 62 years, he is also survived by their three children Stanley McDermott, III and his wife Gail of New York City; Kevin Nairne McDermott and his wife Leslie of Mandeville; and, Martha McDermott Landrum and her husband John of New Orleans, LA; four grandchildren Matthew Buchan McDermott, Dr. Margaret Leslie McDermott, Sarah Griffin Landrum, and George Nairne Landrum; and, his two devoted sisters Miriam McDermott Miller and her husband Donald of Arlington, VA, and Colleen McDermott Connolly of Kinston, NC. He was predeceased by his parents Stanley and Miriam Lee McDermott. A graduate of Jesuit High School, he attended Tulane University at which he lettered in baseball and from which he graduated in 1949. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership fraternity, and Who's Who in American Universities. A graduate of Tulane Law School in 1951, he was an editor of the Tulane Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif, a scholastic honor society. After graduation he served as a law clerk to Justice E. Howard McCaleb of the Louisiana Supreme Court and then served as a lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General Department in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War. After discharge, he practiced law with his father until his death, and later with Bernard Titche, Jr. and Thomas N. Lennox. In 1970, he became a partner in the law firm of Montgomery, Barnett, Brown, and Read. He was a member of the New Orleans, Louisiana, and American Bar Associations, serving on the Board of Governors of the Louisiana Bar Association. For 36 years he was associated with the Mutual Savings and Loan Association where he was President and Chairman of the Board. Through the years he served on several civic boards, including the Greater New Orleans Mental Health Association and the Institute for Human Understanding. He was also a member of the Pickwick Club, the New Orleans Country Club, and the ""Societe des Escargots de Orleanais,"" a men's culinary club. A man of many interests and talents, he was an accomplished chef, an avid golfer, a student of history and politics, and most importantly, a dedicated husband, father, and friend. A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at 11:00 am with visitation from 10:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Church, 400 Metairie Road. Metairie, LA 70005. The burial will be private. The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Jesuit High School, 4133 Banks Street, New Orleans, LA 70119. Betty, please accept my deepest sympathy for the death of your husband, Stan. you were a good friend to my sister and we have never forgotten you. She is living in an assisted living facility in Austin, Texas and her daughter will tell her of Stan's death. Hopefully it will be a good day as she tries to comprehend what is said to her.
