BERGE
James F., of West Burke, VT (formerly of Westwood, NJ) died December 8, 2011. Born July 24, 1923 in Michigan, "Jim" was raised in Essex Count, NJ. Following his Army service in World War II, he married Beth Berge (Quinnan) in 1950, and together raised six children over their four decades in Westwood. He is survived by his second wife, Nancy, with whom he relocated in 1987 to Vermont to enjoy a retirement of traveling, country life and a home which provided an idyllic setting for gatherings for children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his daughters Karen Golding-Staelin, Christine Hedges, Allison Johannessen, his sons Paul, David and Matthew, and ten grandchildren. His wife, Beth, predeceased him.

I had the pleasure of working with Jim at the County Engineer's office from the time I started in 1975 to the time Jim retired in the late 1980's. I admired Jim's artistic abilities, whether it be the charactatures and renderings he would draw for the staff to the paintings he did after joining the Society of Illustrative Artists. I remember how excited he was coming back from those military operations after taking hundreds of photos, and developing large paintings to capture the events. I remember the photos he took of the Air Force refueling operation of a fighter jet while he was lying on his stomach in the belly of the tanker plane over the Atlantic, and the Coast Guard helicopter rescue in the Atlantic Ocean of a small boat in trouble. I hope he realized his dream of building the ultralight airplane and flying over the Vermont countryside dressed in the leather pilot's helmet he got when he retired. He was a fun and talented coworker and I'm glad I had the pleasure to know him.
