Larry Baumann Obituary

Larry Roger Baumann

February 19, 1946 - January 25, 2026

Larry Roger Baumann was born on Feb. 19, 1946, in Chadron, to Bob and Mary Nadine (Babe) (Simpson) Baumann. Larry spent his childhood in Chadron playing baseball with his brothers and working in the family shoe store, F&M Bootery. His love for sports began in childhood and continued throughout his life. In high school, Larry played Legion baseball during the summers and played basketball and ran track during the school year. Larry graduated from Chadron State College in 1968, where he spent all four years playing basketball and running track. He was ultimately inducted into the Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame as a result of his successful college career in both sports.

After college, Larry joined the U.S. Army and was proud to serve his country overseas, and was stationed in both Vietnam and Germany before returning home in 1971. Larry graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1974 and first began practicing law in York. In 1980, Larry moved to North Platte and joined the law practice of Kelley Scritsmier and Byrne, PC, where he practiced law as a partner in the firm until his retirement in 2023.

Larry's law career spanned over 50 years and saw him appear in numerous courts, including multiple state and federal courts, the U.S. Tax Court, and the Nebraska Supreme Court. He enjoyed helping his clients and being in the courtroom and was proud to have had the opportunity to argue a number of cases before the Nebraska Supreme Court.

In addition to the practice of law, Larry was active in the North Platte community, including participating in organizations such as the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Nebraskaland Days Board, Cody Calvery, and the First United Methodist Church.

Larry was known for his gift of gab, his good sense of humor, and his quick wit. In his free time, Larry was an avid reader, he had bookshelves full of his favorite books, and was a lifelong Yankees fan. He also loved Nebraska football, especially in the 1990s, and enjoyed watching professional and college sports of all kinds, including University of Nebraska-Omaha (UNO), Creighton University, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) women's volleyball. Larry and his wife, Marcia, spent 33 years together enjoying traveling, attending sporting events and concerts, especially the Eagles, and their shared love of good food and fine wine.

Above all, family was first for Larry. He had no problem telling anyone who would listen how great his children were, and he loved watching his kids and grandchildren in their many sports and activities. Larry passed on to many of his children and grandchildren a love for sports, reading, and donuts.

Larry also held a special place in his heart for his siblings, Mike, Lee, and Jan, with whom he shared loving and lifelong relationships, his friends from the Ohio street neighborhood in York, and the very special friendships he had with the "Friday Night Hub Club" in North Platte.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Babe Baumann; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bernard and Elaine Bliefernich; and his sister-in-law, Mary Riggleman.

His loving memory will be left with his surviving family members, including his wife, Marcia; his children, Brenda (Russ) Pulling of Highlands Ranch, CO, Andi (Jim) Renshaw of Lone Tree, CO, Abby (Barrett) Brown of Lakewood, CO, Jeff (Bailey) Baumann of Omaha, Chele (Michael) Nyffeler of Lafayette, CO, and Jennifer (Chase) Hansen of St. Augustine, FL. He will be watching over his grandchildren, Bryanna, Rand, Rhys, and Breklyn Pulling, Ryan (Zach) Gammel, Sydney and Luke Renshaw, Joelle and Evelyn Baumann, Eliana Nyffeler, Zane and Jada Morales, and Taven and Annabelle Hansen. He is also survived by his brothers, Mike (Pam) Baumann and Lee (Cheryl) Baumann; his sister, Jan (Dave) Smith; brothers-in-law, Bill (Cheryl) Bliefernich and Pat Riggleman; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Memorials may be directed to Chadron State College, Great Plains Health Callahan Cancer Center, or First United Methodist Church in North Platte.

Service is at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at the First United Methodist Church. Burial follows at 2 p.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, near Maxwell. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. before the service at the church. Carpenter Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Learned this morning about the passing of Larry. We grew up on the same street in Chadron. My mind races back to so many memories. His mom and dad were community leaders in the city. Their home was on my paper route. When Chadron Prep closed down 18 of us joined Larry and other in the public high school. I recall Larry's Johnny rogers like play in the football game in either Rushville or Gordon. Believe we played baseball on Ward 4 team. Simply said a great guy with an inviting personality. Reading the obit today....let me raise a glass a toast a wonderful human being.

Marcia, Abby, Jeff and the rest of the family you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Larry was a very special man. When I think of all the hours we spent together in the bleachers for basketball, volleyball, softball and the sidelines for soccer I smile. Larry was always there with words of encouragement and maybe a friendly word for the ref. Larry never failed to ask about our kids and my parents when we saw each other. He was generous, genuine and truly someone that will have a special place in our hearts. With sincere sympathy, Wade and Susan Evans

Larry was such a meaningful presence to all of us growing up with Abby. I have many fond memories of him as our youth basketball coach—he truly believed in all of us and held us to high standards because he wanted us to see our own potential, both in sports and in life.
Larry and Marcia were always so kind, genuine, and caring. Marcia, Abby, Jeff and family, I am so very sorry for your loss.
