Larry Long Obituary

Larry George Long, passed away at Centennial Park Retirement Village at the age of 83, on Dec. 5, 2023. The son of George and Wilma (Wilson) Long, he was born on Aug. 30, 1940, in North Platte. Larry grew up with three things running through his veins: horses, ranching and rodeo. From a very young age, he was riding horses, and by his teenage years, he was competing as a calf roper, steer wrestler and team roper. Larry graduated from North Platte High School in 1958 and continued working with his dad on the ranch. On Oct. 2, 1960, he was wed to Mary Ann Gordon and the couple had a son, Doug. Larry was involved in the Nebraska State Rodeo Association, serving as association president for two terms. In the early 1970s, he became a member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association, known today as the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association. Larry also competed at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo several times. After his rodeo career ended in the 90s, he became a member of the committee. In 1996, Larry was selected as the Trail Boss Award winner for the Buffalo Bill Rodeo; the same award that his dad and great-uncle had received 22 years earlier. With an extensive history and passion for rodeo, Larry's greatest achievement was his family. He loved his wife, son and grandchildren immensely and was proud of the family he had helped create. Along with his wife, Mary Ann, Larry is preceded in death by his parents. Those left to cherish Larry's memory include his son, Doug (Bonnie) Long of North Platte; granddaughter, Amanda Miller; great-grandson, Christopher Miller; and other family and friends. Memorials are suggested to the NebraskaLand Days Foundation to benefit the Rodeo Committee. Online condolences may be shared at adamsswanson.com. A committal service is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens with Ned Cooper as officiant. Book signing is from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Doug will always remember dad and mom coming up to `the little house´ to play cards. And your mom helping me with knitting. Lol. And of course "Hood" cattle always staying overnight at Longs till the last drive home. Thank you I´m sure our parents are up in heaven playing cards

We send our condolences and may you feel the love from our Father in heaven and your family and friends.
We got to know your dad at Centennial Park when we would go and visit family and friends and your dad got to be a good friend. We always enjoyed visiting with him about days gone by and it was always a pleasure to see him and visit.
Rest in paradise Larry!

Doug & Family,
I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. I am sure your Mom & many Family & Friends welcomed him with open arms. I will cherish the memories of our times with them, and all our Friday night card games when we lived by the Airport. Leo & Larry always had a good time together. I enjoyed reconnecting with your Mom when we were both County Officials. Life is never the same when we lose that last parent. May God Bless you & hold you close as you deal with your loss.
With Loving Friendship,
