Kalicky, C.PP.S., officiating. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2013 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting. The St. John Rosary Society. and the Marian Theatre Guild, together with members of the parish will offer prayers at the funeral home on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. JoAnn attended St. Adalbert Grade School, George Rogers Clark high School and Mercy College of the University of Detroit, obtaining a teaching degree in English and Educational Theater. She taught English Arts at T.F. North High School and St. Francis DeSales High School where she coached speech and debate and worked on high school, dramatic productions. While her children were attending St. John the Baptist School, JoAnn was instrumental in establishing a primary grade learning center (remedial-enrichment), and throughout a span of 20 years, directed over 40 St. John School 2nd and 8th grade plays, all school shows for parish festivals, talent shows and junior choir concerts. JoAnn was passionately involved with the Marian Theatre Guild of St. John Church for decades. She directed and choreographed many productions and served as an officer for many years. She taught religious education at Immaculate Conception Parish and served on the parish council at St. John and was a member of the Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce and the City of Hammond Historical Preservation Board. She was a founding member of Arts Alive!, for the enhancement of the arts in the Whiting-Robertsdale Community. She served on the steering committee for Whiting's "Summer with the Symphony" program. She spent countless hours baking for the annual Arts Alive! "Ethnic Cookie Sale", making vintage aprons and decorating windows duplicating "Buscia's Kitchen" for the annual Pierogi Festival. She was the 2012 recipient of the City of Whiting's Carl Binhammer Award for Community Service. JoAnn was just getting her feet wet with Whiting's "Studio 659" when illness came to her. She loved to bake (especially cookies), crochet, sew, knit and spend countless hours creating her beautiful garden. JoAnn was very proud of her Polish heritage. She was a member of the Polish Women's Alliance and had participated with Polish dance troops throughout her high school years. So this is her story: church, family, children (all children), the town and a garden - a practically perfect life! The family wishes to thank all who kept the stream of fresh flowers in the home, for the hundreds of cards received and the countless acts of kindness and helpfulness. Though suffering from cancer of the lung and lymph, JoAnn passed away peacefully without discomfort. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials to the St. John School Endowment Fund. www.baranfh.com (219) 659-4400.

Thinking of Bunny today on her birthday. Wishing I could call her as always but know she is in a better place. Hope the family is getting through this day as well as possible.

Dear George and Family,
George, I don't know if you remember me - Nan Collins - but I had a summer job with you and Tom when I was in h.s.

Bunny and I shared a wonderful friendship when classmates at GRC, and we always had great visits at our h.s. Reunions. I am recalling visits with you as well, when you accompanied Bunny.

I heard just this morning of Bunny's death and read her obit on line. What a wonderful tribute to her and charming story of her life!

I am stricken with deep sadness at her passing, but as her friend and a Hospice professional for many years, I am heartened to know of her peaceful passing.

Now my thoughts go to you with the certainty of how much you are missing her delightful presence. My hope is that you are comforted by many grand memories of your years together and knowing Bunny is no longer suffering with illness.

I send you and your family my very deepest sympathetic thoughts, and I will cherish the wonderful memories I have of my precious times with Dear Bunny. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers these next weeks.
Most Sincerely, Nan Collins Shively

JoAnn (known as Bunny to me) have been friends for 55 years. We met at Mercy College where we had four wonderful years. Although we do not live close we have kept in contact all these years. Her death makes me sad. Her illness is the sad part, I am glad she is out of her misery from the disease. She will continue to be in my prayers and memories.

Deepest sympathy to the Jancosek Family.
I worked with her father many years ago and knew her mother. It doesn't surprise me that she was such a lovely and loved lady. Wonderful parents!

George and Family:
As Christians we take comfort and find solace knowing our loved one is at peace in God's. Joann was a beautiful person who made a positive constructive difference in the lives she touched. What a remarkable human being. Her goodness, kindness, thoughtfulness and Faith are celebrated with heavy hearts. Somewhere, far beyond the stars, Joann enjoys God's Heavenly banquet from the harvest of her life. George, know that Joann, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Reading of her accomplishments and of the love she had for her family, friends and community, one thought comes to mind. She never expected anything in return. Everything she did was for the betterment of others. Such a rare quality in today's world. I was so lucky to have been counted among her friends. When I would see that she was troubled, or hurt by the words or actions of others, my Italian temper would flare and I would advise her to return their nastiness in kind. She would calm my fire with the most loving, lovely attitude of tolerance and forgiveness for the mistakes of others. I have been blessed in my life by the influence of strong women. She was the most gentle of those good ladies.
