Ralph Salyer Obituary

RALPH C. SALYER "SAL" 9/30/1921 - 5/30/2010
Ralph C. Salyer passed away this past Sunday at St. Margaret's Hospital in Hammond, IN at the age of 88. He is the only son of Joseph and Mary Salyer and was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Salyer Snook. Ralph was a lifetime resident and business owner in Hammond. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia; son, Mark (Carolyn) Salyer; daughters: Kathy (Darryl) Ammon , Cindy (Chris) Batton , Lisa (Craig) Bell and Christie (Steven) Montgomery ; 11 grandchildren: Amanda Pede, Erin Salyer, Ashley Ammon, Danielle Eggers, Heather Black, Samantha Wiening, Megan DeGroot, Jessica and Rachel Bell and Brian and Patrick Montgomery; and 15 great grandchildren: Alexis, Roslyn and Tegan Pede, Gabriel, Delaney and Olivia Salyer, Kayla and Kaylee Ammon, Matthew DeGroot, Zachary and Nolan Eggers, Tyler, Addison and Lucy Black, and Lucas Wiening. Ralph will best be remembered as the owner and president of Salyer Plumbing, Inc. He was a veteran of World War II, serving the Army in the Philippine Islands before returning home to begin his career in the family plumbing business, then known as Joseph H. Salyer & Son Plumbing. A 50+ year member of Plumbers Local Union 307/210, he also served as president of the Calumet Area Plumbing Contractors Association in the early 1980's. Ralph was a 1940 graduate of Hammond High School where he was a three sport athlete in track, wrestling and football. He was a member of the 1939 state championship football team, playing both offense and defense and a member of the Pergy Club. After high school Ralph attended Purdue University in Lafayette, IN for two years to study engineering before enlisting in the Army. During the 1960's, Ralph became interested in automobile racing and was both a driver and team owner. In 1966, Ralph won the SCCA C-modified (ASR) national championship at Riverside International Raceway and was a member of Indiana Northwest Region SCCA. Ralph lived life on his own terms and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Burns Kish Funeral Home located at 5840 Hohman Ave. in Hammond, IN. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 PM. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
