Richard Harlan Obituary

RICHARD L. HARLAN VALPARAISO, IN
Richard L. Harlan died peacefully on January 13, 2012, at the age of 65 at the Valparaiso VNA Hospice. He was the oldest child of Robert and Bernice (Crumley) Harlan of Lafayette, Indiana. Dick was a resident of Valparaiso for the past 20 years. Born in Williamsport, IN on September 22, 1946, Dick Harlan was a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and attended Purdue University. He served his country as a member of the Air Force during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged. An avid sports fan and broadcaster, Dick could be heard and seen announcing Valparaiso High School and Valparaiso University Football and Basketball games for nearly two decades. He took great pride in being a sportscaster for more than 40 years. When not behind the microphone, he could be found on local golf courses. A volunteer in the true sense of the word, Dick was a prominent member of the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club along with several other organizations. He served as Kiwanis Club President in 2001-2002, was named Kiwanian of the Year in 2004 and earned Distinguished Lieutenant Governor status in 2004-2005. Dick was a man of faith and a friend to all who met him. Dick Harlan was preceded in death by his father, Robert Harlan and his brother, Wesley Harlan. He is survived by his mother, Bernice (Crumley) Harlan of Lafayette, Indiana; his brothers: Larry Harlan of Lyles, Tennessee; Forest (Tammy) Harlan of Ashland City, Tennessee; his sister, Jeanette (Pearlie) Braden of Lafayette, Indiana; and his children: TR Harlan of Valparaiso, Indiana; and Nicki (Dan) Williamson of Bloomington, Indiana. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Katherine Williamson and Jack Williamson; as well as several nieces and nephews. The visitation for Dick Harlan will be Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso. A short Memorial Service will begin at 5:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Valparaiso Kiwanis Foundation, American Cancer Society, and the Valparaiso VNA Hospice. MoellerFuneralHome.com

Heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Dick Harlan. He was a very good person, an exemplary Kiwanian, and he will be missed by many. He was the guy who made a lot of our Kiwanis projects work and he did it all with a great sense of humor.

I wish Dick's life had gone into "multiple overtimes"! I feel so fortunate that we met each other through the Valparaiso Kiwanis Club. He was a person with a great deal of humor and compassion who was a wonderful friend. We are going to miss him very much. We know he will enjoy his time at that "big family reunion". May he rest in peace in the arms of the Lord! We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the Harlan Family.

I enjoyed knowing Dick so much during the many years we shared responsibilities at VU Crusader basketball games. He was a great tease and full of fun--I already miss him a lot and send my prayers to TR and all of the Harlan family. Rest in God's hands, Richard. Dot Nuechterlein

My sincerest condolences to the entire Harlan family. I was priveleged to work with Dick as his "color man" on many VHS broadcasts in the late 90's/early 00's. He was always a professional on the air and a gentleman off the air. He became a good friend, and I will miss him.
