ABRAHAM GITLOW Obituary

GITLOW--Abraham L. NYU and its Leonard N. Stern School of Business deeply mourn the loss of its visionary Dean Emeritus, Abe Gitlow. A remarkable teacher, charismatic leader, and prolific author, during his 40 years of service Abe Gitlow was a principal architect of the stature and renown the Stern School enjoys today. He first joined the NYU School of Commerce, as it was then known, as a faculty member in 1947 after service in the Air Force. In two outstanding decades as dean, beginning in 1965, the School grew into a highly diversified institution with an international reputation for excellence in academic research and teaching through his emphasis on recruiting top faculty. And he ensured the School had a proud and fitting academic home -- Tisch Hall. Active even in retirement, Gitlow was a tireless supporter of NYU Stern, meeting with alumni, attending alumni conferences and gatherings, and setting an example of generosity and engagement for generations of students and alumni. A man of boundless optimism and energy, a cherished University citizen, and a wonderful colleague, Abe personified "the School of Opportunity," and transformed the School and the lives of generations of students. He will be greatly missed. His family and loved ones are in our thoughts and our hearts; we want them to know his spirit will live on in NYU's memory and in the great school he served with such distinction and devotion and did so much to build. Martin Lipton, Chair, NYU Board of Trustees William Berkley, Chair-elect, NYU Board of Trustees, and Chair of the Stern Board of Overseers John Sexton, NYU President Peter Blair Henry, Dean, Leonard N.
