I never actually worked with Alvin, being at a different institution, but he still became a mentor simply by sharing patients over the years and going to Mt Sinai for conferences. He was wonderful teacher of both humanity and science, and a friend. His approach to caring for patients- straightforward, logical, and with great knowledge and experience was coupled with kindness and caring. A model for all physicians who knew and loved him.

I never worked at Sinai, but still had a great deal of contact with Alvin. The finest of men, brilliant and a model of what a physician should be for all who knew him.

Dr Teirstein.
After all these years I never have forgotten your words to me at your office visit with me in 2011.
You were the core of me staying alive all these years.
I ask you to please keep me alive as I want to stay on this earth.
You are truly an angel. You were such a Doctor who opened up your heart and mind for my care.
I miss you.

To the Teirstein Family,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Dr. Alvin Teirstein. I was not due for an appointment so I only just learned of his passing. He was a caring and compassionate physician which tells me that he was that way outside his practice.
Because it takes away someone we love and causes us pain, death is an enemy. However we can turn to God for comfort. I hope this thought in Psalm 55:22 proves a comfort to you.
Sincerely, a patient,
Iris Thomas

To the Family of Dr. Alvin Teirstein:
It is with extreme sorrow that I acknowledge the passing of Dr.Alvin Teirstein. It is difficult to accept that he is no longer with us and available to prescribe treatment for his patients and to inspire his colleagues and students with his knowledge, devotion and enthusiasm. I still picture him in his offices at Mount Sinai and presiding at the Sarcoidosis Support Group meetings where he was so informative, and tirelessly answered questions.
He had a towering and reassuring presence and he helped so many. As a patient of his I can only tell you how much his expertise, kindness and caring will be missed. He gave such encouragement and expert medical advice to all persons seeking his judgment and skill.
If we, as patients find it painful to contend with his loss, I can barely imagine what grief his family must be feeling and I can only tell you that my thoughts are with you. It has to be of some comfort to know that he had so much to give, that he gave it so generously and that he made such a difference in so many lives.
My husband and I along with countless others will miss him terribly.

Dr. Teirstein was a real mensch, a man I came to meet only late in life while at the hospital for major surgery in another specialty, fittingly the heart, because Alvin was all heart and soul. His family, including his son Mark, a former colleague of mine, has much to be proud of and wonderful memories from a father's life well-lived. Dr. Teirstein must have touched thousands of patients over the years, and even more who were not patients, and I would surmise that each and every one has nothing but heartfelt feelings for the man.

Dr Teirstein treated both my mother and husband. Although I only met him a few times, I was impressed by his intelligence, kindness, and most importantly his wit. Through his sense of humor he made some frightening and intense moments easier to cope with. I only learned of his passing through a friend I recently recommended him to. I send my deepest sympathies to his family and the Mt Sinai faculty.

To the Teirstein family;
We thank God for gracing us with the radiant spirit of Dr. Alvin S Teirstein - Allowing his essence to penetrate the lives of many.
Dr. Teirstein brought joy inside our tears. He supplied the air beneath our wings so we could fly. He brought in the sunlight.
His dedication to the Mount Sinai Medical Center Sarcoidosis Support Group has changed the lives of those of us who suffer from the illness and our caregivers. He educated us on how to cope and function while experiencing the constant ups and downs of Sarcoidosis; but it was Dr. Teirstein’s wit and humorous stories that made us realize being ill does not mean you cannot laugh and enjoy the good in life. His treatments were not just based on test results, he treated his patients’ ability to function and live an enjoyable life.
As executive committee members for the Mount Sinai Medical Center Sarcoidosis Support Group, it will be our utmost honor to contribute to its continued success and longevity. As a family that had been “going steady” with Dr. Teirstein, our family physician, for the past 20 years, we will always remember the sunlight that Dr. Teirstein brought to our family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of great loss.

Once I met Dr. Tierstein I knew I no longer had to worry about my illness. I so looked forward to seeing him each time I'd be in New York. He made sure that wherever in the world I was, there would be someone there I could trust to take care of me. I will miss him dearly. My condolences to his family. . . My wife and I will always remember the loving care and compassion that Dr. T exhibited. He is surely the Father of Sarcoidosis research. He leaves the work in the capable hands of Drs Padilla and Morgenthau and the rest of the Mt. Sinai family

Dr. Alvin Teirstein was a giant among doctors and ahead of his time. He put patients first and foremost in the treatment, respect, love and care that he doled out. Dr. Teirstein was a forerunner in research and as an advocate for better detection, better treatment and more studies in his quest to find a cause and a cure for sarcoidosis among his lung patients and among lung disease sufferers throughout the world. We will miss his knowledge, his insights, his level-headed perspectives and, mostly, his caring generosity. He was ferocious as he engaged with us in the fight for our lives. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, colleagues and, mostly, with his patients. We have lost not only a doctor, but one of our staunchest and most passionate supporters and advocates. We must continue his fight.

He was a great man, a compassionate and dedicated doctor, and a close, dear friend. He helped thousands of us deal with sarcoidosis when others didn't understand. His uplifting attitude made us feel better beyond any medicine. He always knew how to help us and truly cared about his patients. He was a member of our family and we will remember and miss him always. We extend our sympathies to his family and share his loss. He was an exceptional doctor and a great man.
