ARTHUR WEIDER Obituary

WEIDER--Arthur, died November 8th at his home in Manhattan. He was 91 years old. A perfectly content and optimistic man, Arthur's generosity and trust were absolute. A practicing clinical psychologist until his death, he developed and held the copyright to the Cornell Index, a psychological instrument used to screen inductees in WWII and still in use by police departments around the world. Born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx, he attended DeWitt Clinton High School and Columbia University before earning a Ph.D. at New York University, in whose alumni association he was active. He served on the medical staffs of New York Hospital and Roosevelt Hospital and on the faculty of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, also teaching for many years at the Bellevue School of Nursing. Known to early cable television viewers as "The People's Psychologist", he often conducted therapy sessions in the dining rooms of the restaurants and nightclubs he owned on Manhattan's East Side during the 1970s and 80s. The two horses he owned on the harness racing circuit in the late 1960's were celebrated for preferentially winning on Jewish holidays. His publications included text books of psychology and an autobiography, published in 1994. He is survived by his wife, Sissie, five children, five grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and a sister.

To the Weider family - Felicia and I would like to extend our very deepest sympathy. Arthur was a brilliant man who had a wonderful sense of humor and a warm and caring way about him. As both a professional inspiration and a friend, he will be dearly missed.

To the family of Arthur Weider,

I am proud to say that Arthur was my mentor, advisor, and friend for 38 years. Arthur was a kind, insightful, and generous man, ever present as an empathic listener and wise counselor. A perennial optimist (and punster) -- a positive psychologist decades before the term was fashionable -- Arthur referred to himself as an 'ego dilator," eschewing the more common "shrink." Proud of his own accomplishments as well as those of his wife and children Arthur took delight in the successes of others. A protege of Dr. David Wechsler and early collaborator of Dr. Arthur Benton, Dr. Arthur Weider was a distinguished psychologist in his own right. Above all Arthur was a mensch! He is already sorely missed. I was blessed to have known him.

To the family of Arthur Weider,

We join with so many others who knew Arthur in offering our deepest sympathy on his passing.

Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.

My you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt by all who knew and loved him.

In sympathy,
