Avery Dulles Obituary

DULLES--Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J. Fordham University and the Board of Trustees mourn the loss of our Trustee colleague, Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J. Ordained at the Fordham University Church in 1956, Cardinal Dulles began his distinguished teaching career at Fordham. Following appointments at Woodstock College and The Catholic University of America, he returned to Fordham in 1988 as the Laurence J. McGinley, S.J. Professor of Religion and Society, a position he held until his retirement earlier this year. An Internationallyknown author and lecturer, he published over 20 major books and hundreds of articles, essays and reviews. In 2001, he became the first American theologian to be named to the College of Cardinals. Fordham honored Cardinal Dulles with one of the first Fordham Founder's Awards, an honorary Doctorate of Letters and the President's Medal. Cardinal Dulles honored Fordham by his distinguished presence in our community and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his Fordham colleagues and the members of the Fordham Jesuit Community. John N. Tognino, Chairman of the Fordham University Board of Trustees Joseph M. McShane, S.J. President of Fordham University

Cardinal Dulles joins his Godfather, Father Christopher Huntington, my dear friend, in our Lord's embrace. I am grateful for knowing Avery and we've all been blessed by his richness of faith and humility.

May God bless him abundantly always,

One of the many great things about Cardinal Dulles was that as a convert from Protestantism, he remained caring and lucid in his arguments in favor of his converstion, never belittling other religions. He was a model of Roman Catholic apologetics as well as a graceful, reflective priest with a healthy sense of humor. He was and is a real role model for his faith.

As pastor of St. Mary's in Auburn at the time of his becoming a Cardinal on February 21, 2001, I remember how warmly the people of Auburn felt toward Cardinal Dulles, their native son. May he rest in peace!

To the family of Avery Cardinal Dulles and his fellow Jesuits:
I, too, mourn the death of Cardinal Dulles and extend my deepest sympathy to you all. I have been an admirer, a friend, and pen pal of Cardinal Dulles for some time. In February, 2006, I mailed him 8 books on Auburn, NY and Cayuga County. I received several personally written responses from him, which I cherish.

He suffered grave injuries as a young Naval Officer in World War II. An American hero; an intellectual icon.
