The Yom Kippur haftorah from Isaiah begins with this promise:
“I note how they fare and will heal them: I will guide them and mete out solace to them. And to the mourners among them, these heartening, comforting words:
“It shall be well,
Well with the far and the near…said the Lord.”
These divine words, uttered in ancient times, echo the same heartfelt message that Benzi Carmel brought to the community at Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation for the past few years. Not so much by his words, though those were often reassuring, especially to the children he taught, but more so by his very presence.
A presence that sparkled and gleamed from his eyes like some eternal flame. A presence that flourished in his robust laughter and blossomed in his perpetual smile. A presence that thundered in song with a love of community, Judaism and Israel.
This was his gift to us…a spirit that shone so playfully, so vitally, so joyously, that the divine sparks within our own hearts were instantly enflamed by his presence.
A spirit that still shines and delights and enlivens, and whose essence is found in this divine promise from Isaiah:
“It shall be well,
Well with the far and the near...said the Lord”

An untinted soul passed on to the gate of heaven leaving an irrepairable tear in the tapestry of humanity. For all the people of Israel who knew him,the void will remain forever. But the ''young'' who are now deprived from the presence of a the only Giant in his field that I have ever known, are the real victims of his untimley death.
Shalom, Matok Sheli
