BENJAMIN SEAWELL Obituary

SEAWELL--Benjamin Crawford, age 65 died January 9, 2023. He was in the care of hospice and died surrounded by his loved ones. Ben was born on October 21, 1957. His formative years were spent in North Carolina. A musician, who played the upright bass, he attended Willian Paterson University and majored in Jazz Studies. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Picard, a sister Pamela Langford, brothers James Seawell and Ronald Seawell. He also leaves Jarrett Eavey his stepson, whose mother Ruth Kamalich died in 2009. Ben's last years were spent doing what he loved most, playing, and composing music and collaborating with other musicians. Ben will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and service to others. From his living room window, he watched the hawks in Fort Tryon Park. When you see one, it may be Ben, winking at you.

Ben joined our first Rock and Roll band in the mid '70s in Wilmington. He was clearly the best musician. Later, in Durham NC after he had honed his jazz bass chops we were housemates. Ben was a working musician supporting the best players and singers in the area. It was only natural that he would migrate to NYC and continue his pursuits. He was a great guy and a lot of fun to be around.

I´m very sorry to hear of Ben´s passing. He was a bright spot for me during my early college years when I really needed some guidance. I still
think of the laughs we had.
Some years later, we reconnected and hung out a bit in New York. He was very supportive and always great to talk to. A real loss.
