BERNARD COHEN Obituary

COHEN--Dr. Bernard, passed away November 27, at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where he spent his entire career as a physician and a scientist. Dr. Cohen, the Morris B. Bender Professor of Neurology until his retirement in 2017, was internationally known for his research on the brain and the vestibular system. He was a caring physician and an avid teacher and mentor. Born in Newark, New Jersey on April 30, 1929, Dr. Cohen's education and training took him from Middlebury College to New York, where he studied medicine at NYU, and met his beloved wife Phoebe, with whom he enjoyed a sustaining 62-year long marriage. Gifted with an extraordinary zest for life, Dr. Cohen shared with family and friends his passions for the outdoors, including fishing, skiing and cycling, and for the arts, notably music and literature. He is survived by his three children, Alexander (Kim Allen) Cohen, Nathaniel (Sherry) Cohen, Margaret Cohen, and by his grandchildren, Samuel and Maxwell Klotz, Ari, Shaina, and Jonah Cohen, and Zachary Allen Cohen. A service will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel at 12pm, Sunday, December 1. The family is establishing a lectureship in his honor. Contributions should be made out to Mount Sinai Health System with "In Memory of Bernard Cohen" on the memo line. Checks should be mailed to The Mount Sinai Development Office, One Gustave L. Levy Place, Box 1049, New York, NY 10029-6574.

Bernie, We hadn't known each other for very long but in that short time - well I hope you won't be insulted if I share that you were the grandfather/ father I never had. Thank you for all the wonderful stories about your life in New York, for introducing me to Rugalah and Borscht for the first time, from the story behind Wagner's opera, to teaching me about the vestibular system and Jewish history. I will miss visiting you on Sundays and the lunches we had together. I even learned how to make a few things that I hoped to share with you after covid was over. I may have found the answer to making the perfect bagel too. The little tree you gave me is alive and well, despite my fears for it's life in my dark apartment, especially after you told me that you considered it am extension of your wife's soul. I will miss you tremendously. As an introvert I am in awe of your tireless enthusiasm for learning, people and life. Even the energy you put into planning events astounded me. It has been such a great honour to know you. I hope this message finds your family doing well. I will miss you greatly and always be reminded of you when I have Rugalah and water Phoebe. Love, Caroline

I knew Bernard Cohen for over half a century, and had the privilege of working for him throughout most of those memorable years. I will always cherish his memory and the times we spent together at the lab, his home, on social occasions and abroad. And I will forever be very grateful to him for aiding me in a special hour of need. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Bernie was a hero to me and I could not have had a better boss for over 10 years. He was an amazing person with the best smile and personality of anyone on this planet. I have so many things I could say and they are all just amazing. I went to Moscow with his research team twice and he was universally respected on all ends of the world. What a great man.
