CALEB SMITH Obituary

SMITH--Caleb Michael, age 42, died after a brief illness on February 11, 2013 in New York City. The son of the late Patricia Clark Smith and Warren Smith, Caleb was the Director of the Media Center for Art History at Columbia University, where he was also finishing a master's thesis in American Studies. Born in Wisconsin, Caleb grew up in New Mexico and graduated from UNM (BA '95, BFA '96). He moved to New York from Boston in 2000, and started working at Columbia University soon afterwards. Caleb famously walked and photographed every street of Manhattan, documenting his experience at: www.newyorkcitywalk.com. His photographs of Broadway are in the New-York Historical Society's collection, and he contributed photos to the Museum of the City of New York's recent exhibition The Greatest Grid. He contributed to the Encyclopedia of New York City and taught New York: Architecture and Cultural History in Columbia's Summer Session. Caleb was a gentle and generous person, and an inspiring leader. Bringing a unique perspective to everything he did, Caleb shaped the Department's global media projects, while training students in 360-degree panorama photography. He will be deeply missed by his partner Subhashini Kaligotla, his father Warren Smith, his stepmother Anne Marie Werner-Smith, his brother Joshua, and his sister-in-law Paula as well as by friends, colleagues, and students at Columbia University. Condolences can be sent to Subhashini Kaligotla and/or Warren Smith c/o The Department of Art History, Columbia University, 826 Schermerhorn Hall, 1190 Amsterdam Ave., NY, NY 10027.

Caleb, I visited with you when you were still a teenager and then again when you stayed at Lenore's while visiting Albuquerque. It has been an honor to know you even a little bit. You will always live in my heart. I loved picking up the Starbucks coffee and a breakfast sandwich for you when we realized Lenore didn't have any good coffee around. I always hoped to see you again.

Caleb was a kind man. He was a gentleman even before he was a man, as I recall from knowing him in the high school years. We've lost a very good, forgiving, gentle, kind person.
