CARL MENGES Obituary

MENGES--Carl Braun. Carl Menges died at home in East Hampton, NY on September 8, 2021 in the presence of his three sons and his wife of 56 years. He was in his very favorite place - on his terrace overlooking Hook Pond. Born in New York City on September 17, 1930, he died just a week short of his 91st birthday. The son of Hermann and Alice Braun Menges, Carl was raised in Pleasantville, New York. He graduated with honors from Hamilton College in 1951 and from Harvard Business School in 1953. After business school, he went to work for Owens Corning Fiber Glass and then was lured to Wall Street and worked for several years at Modell, Roland and Stone. The bulk of his business career was spent at Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette (DLJ), joining the firm in 1966 and retiring in 2000 after the firm was purchased by Credit Suisse. In 1973, he opened the London office of DLJ and spent four wonderful years there. He returned to the New York office as Vice Chairman of DLJ and Chief Executive of Wood, Struthers and Winthrop, a subsidiary of DLJ. Carl was known for his astute business savvy and strict adherence to the ethics of financial investing. Carl was a Life Trustee of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, and a board member of Hamilton College, serving as Vice Chairman and as a Charter and Life Trustee. He co-founded the Alexander Hamilton Institute in Clinton, NY which sponsors the annual Carl B. Menges Colloquium devoted to significant themes in American History. Carl was also a Trustee of the New York Historical Society for many years and rarely missed one of their marvelous history lectures. In his lifetime, Carl served on many boards including the Greenwall Foundation, GTEC, Allen Stevenson School, Boys Club of New York, Tiedemann Investment Group, and The Union Club. Carl spent summers in East Hampton and was a member and Past President of The Maidstone Club. He loved East Hampton and spent his retirement years there. In 1985, he established a scholarship for graduating seniors of East Hampton High School with a similar passion for United States history. He followed their college pursuits and career choices and enjoyed any opportunity to share a meal and spirited discourse with them. He was also a lifelong student himself, taking courses at Columbia University in his retirement years and, more recently, taking history courses on-line from Hillsdale College. Carl was a great sportsman - squash, golf, skiing, and shooting - and he travelled the world to pursue his interests. He was a member of the U.S. Seniors Golf Association and enjoyed playing some of the great courses across America. He was a devoted New York Yankees fan and, during his retirement years, never missed watching a game. He was lucky enough to be able to go to Cooperstown twice to witness the induction of players into the Hall of Fame of the sport he loved so much. Carl is survived by his wife Cordelia, sister Helen McCrea, three sons Jake (and Nicole), Ben, Sam (and Julianna), and grandchildren Gardner, Serena, Sophie, Ware and Greer as well as many nieces and nephews all of whom adored him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carl's honor to the Alexander Hamilton Institute, 21 West Park Row, Clinton, NY 13323.

Cordelia-it was with great sadness that I learned of Carl´s passing. Sadness mixed with such wonderful memories my time with both of you in London nearly 40 years ago. Carl had a big impact on me in many ways, and not just in business. We had lunch at The Union Club a couple of years ago, covered a lot of stuff, and that just added to my bank of happy memories. With love, Brooks

Carl hired me into a very small team that he managed at DLJ in London in 1975. He led the team by his own example of integrity and hard work. He was a gentleman in every way and I am very grateful for the opportunity he gave me to develop my career on Wall Street. Many, many fond memories.

Carl hired me and I joined DLJ.
I will keep the lasting memory of a real gentleman.

I was so sorry to receive this news, however it is very comforting to consider the wonderful life Mr. Menges led and the profound impact he had on so many. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word.
