CHARLES DICKEY Obituary

DICKEY--Charles D., Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Scarborough, Maine on December 9, 2012. He was 94. Charley was a graduate of St. Paul's School in Concord, NH and Yale University, Class of 1940. After college, he worked briefly for J.P. Morgan and as a special agent for the FBI before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in WWII. He was a veteran of the 5th Marine Division and served in the Battle of Iwo Jima and in the occupation of Japan. Following the war, he joined the Scott Paper Company as a salesman. After numerous positions, including time as President of British Columbia Forest Products, he became Chairman and CEO of Scott Paper in 1971, and held that position for 11 years before retirement. He was a director of General Electric, J.P. Morgan and Cigna. He served as Chairman of the Smithsonian National Board. In addition, he worked tirelessly for numerous civic organizations. He received an honorary LL.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. He went to great lengths to stay connected and close to his many friends. He was an avid bee keeper and fly fisherman. He thrived in Maine at "Soundings" his summer place on Mount Desert Island where afternoon sails on "Tyee" were the order of the day. He devoured books on history and biographies of great leaders. He was very much a product of a past that valued personal relationships, hard work, humbleness, and integrity. He is survived by Helen ("Rogie"), his beloved wife of 65 years. He was the adoring father of five children: Charley Dickey of Seattle, WA; Heidi Fitz of Cumberland, ME; Sylvia Whitman of Weston, MA; Catherine Dickey of Dedham, MA; and Rob Dickey of West Newton, MA and the much admired father-in-law of their spouses. He was the proud grandfather of Sam, Eric, Megan, Pete, Matthew, Zach, Brad, Heidi, Barrett, Sloan, Will, Matt, Kyle, Charley and Nell, and the delighted great-grandfather of Lukas. He is also survived by his brother Whit Dickey of Lebanon, NH and his sisters, Mary Lindsay, of Cold Spring Harbor, NY, and Cathy Dickey of Princeton, NJ. A celebration of Charley's life will be held on Monday, December 17th at 11:00am at St. Alban's Church, 885 Shore Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. In lieu of flowers, you may donate in Charley's name to the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 201, Topsham, ME 04086, or the Good Shepard Food Bank, 111 Pine Tree Industrial Parkway, Portland, ME 04102. Dear All Dickeys,

Such a kind, wonderful man, I am so sorry that he will no longer be in Northeast in the summers, banging around on Tyee with hapless crew (like me) on board. He was a gracious and kind friend to me, always happy to see me and generous with his time and his raspberries.

I'd like to extend my sympathies to Rogie and the Dickey family. Cnarley was privileged to live a full and productive 94 years, but our association was limited during difficult times. Peter P. Miller,Jr

I too was honored to work within the Scott organisation during that wonderful era of building of the worldwide enterprise. Post Mr MCabe three great leaders took the helm for that task - Harry Dunning, Paul Baldwin and Charley Dickey. I was privileged to work with Paul and Charley, both of them truly inspirational leaders and human beings of the greatest integrity. What an illustrious lifelong career Charley enjoyed in service to his country, business and family.
I am deeply saddened at his passing and extend to Rogie and the family condolences from myself and my wife Judy, and on behalf of all of those members of the Bowater-Scott Australia staff who were equally privileged to be inspired by him.

Dear Rogie, Charlie, Heidi, Sylvia, Catherine & Rob,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as we mourn Charlie's passing. For over 20 years he was a gracious host to us at “Soundings”, always interested in our well-being and success. We will always fondly remember our daily afternoon sails on “Tyee” with Charlie at the helm. He was a humble leader and terrific role model.

Much Love,

Uncle Charley will be remembered by those of us in his extended family for his warmth and humor, his generosity, his accomplishments, his honey, and his golden retrievers! He was "a chip off the old block" -- following his father in schools, business, adventures, philanthropy, commitment to family and friends - and a dry but incisive wit. Rogie is a lucky girl to have had such a long life with him. She and we will all miss him.

Under Charles Dickey's leadership Scott Paper developed both innovative products and talented people that served both Scott's customers and stock holders well. Charlie, and the leaders he selected to run Scott's divisions, made Scott Paper a very special and exciting place to work during my 40 years with the company. My condolences to Charlie's entire family, you are in my prayers.
