CHARLES KINSOLVING Obituary

KINSOLVING--Charles McIlvaine Jr., 94, passed away April 11th. A life-long resident of New York City, he was involved in the political, cultural, and intellectual life of the city for decades. With his extraordinary range of interests and irrepressible curiosity, he lived a fascinating life. A humanitarian, charming raconteur, club man, and provocateur, he travelled the world from Angkor Wat to Timbuktu and was always interested in others. Charles was born in January 1927 in New York City. He attended St. Bernard's School, St. Paul's School, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of St. Anthony Hall. He did graduate work at Harvard, Columbia, and the Sorbonne. His passionate involvement in NYC Democratic politics began in the 1950's as did his career in advertising. He began at Young and Rubicam, and then moved to McCann Erickson. Starting in 1960, he worked for the Newspaper Advertising Bureau for over 25 years. In 1966 he became Vice-President for Marketing and Planning. With his extroversion, imagination, and broad vision, he advised advertisers on their marketing issues, particularly as they pertained to travel, leisure, and areas of financial and public opinion. He was also instrumental in convincing newspaper publishers across the nation to switch to color printing. Concurrently, he became deeply involved in New York City politics. Beginning in 1950, he was an organizer for the Reform Democrats in Manhattan. His involvement in Democratic politics came from a profound altruism, often masked by an acerbic wit. He was inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt, Adlai Stevenson, Averill Harriman and other left-leaning luminaries, all of whom he knew. He managed the campaigns of Herman Badillo for Mayor of New York, Paul O'Dwyer for U.S. Senate, and Carol Greitzer for City Council. He was a delegate from New York at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention supporting Eugene McCarthy for president, where he was photographed attempting to reason with Mayor Richard Daley. He was a long-serving member and Chairman of Manhattan's Community Board 6. In the 1990s, he ran for New York State Assembly. Intolerant of prejudice and corruption, he was always an advocate for the disadvantaged and underprivileged in the pursuit of equality and justice. Charles married the former Coral Eaton in 1962. Coral was a great partner and shared his interest in politics. Their apartment in New York was, for years, the venue of boisterous and exuberantly enjoyed parties attended by figures from New York literary and political circles. After Coral's death, he married the glamorous Jolie Hammer, whom he had met on Community Board 6. Jolie died in 1995. In 1998 he married Jacqueline Vogelstein, a painter and lady of gracious sophistication. Charlie's humor, kindness, and humanity will be greatly missed by many, particularly his elder brother Lucien Kinsolving of Branford, CT, his niece Lucie Kinsolving and her husband Richard McElhiney of NYC, his niece Katharine Kinsolving and her husband Richard Baumann of Sharon, CT, three grandnephews and one grandniece. A memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, kindly send a contribution to any humanitarian cause.

I will greatly miss Charlie's kindness, support and influence. I know he was a mortal...but I wish he was still here. He was a unique spirit.

I reported to Charlie in my first real job, that of media research assistant at McCann Erickson. I also reported to a spirited young woman in the office next to his: Coral Eaton. (They weren´t a couple yet, or at least no one seemed to suspect they were.) I was in awe of Charlie, in awe of everything about him: his deep rooted intelligence, keen sense of humor,
sophistication, and joie de vivre. There was so much to learn from this man, and although his insights into the advertising business were priceless, I value more the varied knowledge I absorbed working with him over the years.

Charlie was a New York Institution. He will be missed, but I think not forgotten.

I first crossed paths with Charlie when Pat (my late wife) was working with the Reform movement in New York City Democratic politics during the 60's and I was working in journalism and National Democratic politics. From then through recent visits to Charlie at his summer home in the Hamptons he was always in sight, always tuned into what was going on in New York and national politics and the broader culture. His knowledge and memory flowed backwards through not only his astonishing personal experiences and history but also that of his equally remarkable family.

On a more personal level he indeed was a "consummate raconteur" and a good and faithful friend.

I'm so saddened to hear of Charlie's passing.

Having shared many a Coffee House evening with this charming, erudite and handsome man, and speaking for my fellow Coffeehousers, we will miss him dearly.

His generosity in hosting us so beautifully at his home in Easthampton is a sweet and lasting memory and we offer our deepest condolences to his family.

I am so saddened to learn of the death of this ever-energetic, charming man of imagination, political passion, and great wit. Charlie was one of my parent’s Leo and Agnes’s oldest and dearest friends. I remember him, from my childhood, dashing about at my parents’ parties, rushing into my father’s office at the Bureau, rolling out some great idea, sitting at the dinner table, first with Coral, and subsequently, with Jolie, and then Jacqueline, telling stories (I think of him as the consummate raconteur), and opining on so many things. I will always be grateful to Charlie for looking after my mother, taking her out to dinner after my father’s death, and just checking in. He remained a loyal friend to her, kind of her rock (although she’d never have admitted it). I wish I’d had a chance to see him in recent years, talk some New York City politics, and thank him myself. Would love to have known what he thought about the current mayoral campaign, and the state of “the paper.” He made so many contributions, not only to Democratic politics, but first and foremost in my mind, to the newspaper industry. One of a kind. What a guy. Grateful to have known Charlie. I send my deepest condolences to you, Lucy, whom I have met—and to the rest of Charlie’s family.
