We know that this season of remembrance is challenging, but also an opportunity to honor and remember collectively what a loving and committed woman, mother, wife and doctor Claire was. This picture with Claire and Charlotte really says it all. Our love to Matt, Charlotte, Sheryl and Mitch and all Claire's family and friends. Debbie and Jim

Claire and I were Jeff Scholars together, which meant we were took a wonderful trip to China & Tibet together in 2009 (see photos). I was also lucky enough to be in the same first year dorm with Claire and Matt. Claire was one of the most down to earth people I'd ever met. Amongst a group of very talented people at UVa, Claire stood out as someone committed to helping others and more interested in contributing to the world than any accolades. It's no surprise she went on to be such a beloved doctor. I am so sorry for your loss and so grateful I had the chance to know Claire.

A friend of mine recommended I seek out Claire as a potential primary care physician. I have just found out that as she was treating his cancer she was suffering herself. How selfless. I'm left with a sense of loss, even though I never knew her.

I am moved to deep sadness with the news of the loss of Claire. I knew her only as a high school student of mine, when she was already everything everyone says she was - incredibly bright, thoughtful, a good critical-thinker, intuitive, compassionate, and a remarkably humble young woman. Although so capable, she never called attention to herself. It was my honor to be able to guide her learning. I feel for the family, and relay my hopes for at least a few drops of joy in the memories. You raised and loved (and were mothered by) and knew an incredible person.

I am so touched to see this photo and tribute to Claire. I spent several sessions of our gynecologic clinic at Richmond working alongside Claire as she developed her skills as a proceduralist. I say "alongside" very intentionally, because though I was technically there as her faculty attending, I really just was there to hand her instruments and marvel at her natural abilities. As many have heard me say in the last few weeks, she was the most dexterous trainee I've ever had the privilege to work with. What made that even more remarkable, was she had absolutely no hubris about her abilities. She just inspired confidence in patients with her calm and her certain movements. I will never forget the great joy I felt one Friday morning knowing Claire was taking over my role as 'teacher' for that particular clinic - I just knew everything would go well for the patients because Dr. Montaigne was at the helm. It was a most wonderful sensation.
Our community and world lost a most exceptional human in her passing. I hold you all in my thoughts, and hope our collective memories of her greatness will help you in bearing the weight of your grief. Thank you for giving us this space to share our reflections.

I worked with Claire at the Richmond clinic. She was always patient, calm and kind. I never saw her frazzled once, she always seemed wise beyond her years. This is a devastating loss. My heart goes out to her family, to her husband, her parents, her sister, her grandmother and her daughter.

Here's one from our many hikes together, taken on New Year's day, 2018, outside of the Portland area. It had just snowed and by the next day it was beautiful and clear. It was so quiet and all we could hear were the crunching beneath our snowshoes and the pups running around. I will never forget that day. Miss you Claire.

I just learned the news of Claire´s death and want to express my very deepest sympathy to all who knew and loved her, most especially her family and her OHSU family. Claire took over much of my patient case load when I retired last year. I knew my patients would be well cared for and was so grateful that Claire would be there to make the transition so seamless for the patients I had been seeing for decades. What a wonderful woman and doctor. Gone way too soon.

I worked with Claire at OHSU (I´m a nurse). We delivered many, many babies together. She had the most beautiful, gentle way with patients. She never judged them; she just met them right where they we´re She was a joy to work with and I have fond memories of sitting at the nurses´ station chatting with her when she was pregnant with Charlotte. I am so sorry for her loss, and for the grief her family is surely feeling. She was one of a kind. The world is poorer without her. -Brynn Macaulay, RN

My wife and I are so sad to hear about the death of Claire. She was our doctor and such a wonderful kind, intelligent, caring, and empathetic physician. She saved my life! When I had COVID just before Thanksgiving 2020 (pre vaccines) I wasn't sure what to do as the holiday was approaching and I was getting sicker with lower oxygen saturations. She did a telehealth visit with me on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, and convinced me to go to OHSU for admission. I, also being a doctor, of course wanted to avoid that, but she calmly and talked me through what I needed to do. I was much worse after admission, and if she hadn't convinced me to go to the hospital, I am not sure what would have happened if I had stayed home that night. I sit here and still can't believe she is gone. What a terrible loss for her family and all those patients she would have helped during her career as a Family Doctor. I am sorry we won't be in town for the memorial. I am hoping OHSU does something special to recognize Claire for her wonderful qualities as a physician, wife, mother, and daughter. If there is anything my wife and I can ever do for you, please reach out.

I received a letter from OHSU today sharing the sad news of Dr. Montaigne´s death. It took my breath away. I moved to Portland a year ago and immediately scheduled an appointment with Dr. Montaigne. Was a patient of Dr Montaigne´s for less than two years, but during this brief period with her, I was thrilled to have such a caring, understanding and knowledgeable doctor. I had no idea that she was battling for her life, and thinking back, I realize how insignificant my issues were. It breaks my heart that she leaves a young family. My sincerest condolences to her husband, daughter, parents and all other family members and friends who loved her. With love.

Dr. Claire Montaigne was my primary care provider. I searched for a doctor for a year that had the qualities in a physician I was desiring after several providers that could not help me.
I connected immediately with Dr. Montaigne, she had an intuitive sense about her and I felt she could truly understood my 10 year medical struggle. My struggle was defined and proper treatment was administered in a short period of time which has been life changing for me and my family, I am living life fully now.
I last interacted with Dr. Montaigne in May and I had no idea she was fighting cancer. In that last visit she was consoling me after the death of my best friend who had lost her life to cancer the day before. Dr. Montaigne´s compassion was so real in that moment for me, I found it to be so loving and will never forget that kindness.
My hope is that her husband and daughter (entire family) understands what a gifted healer she was at such a young age and that she was a physician that made a major difference in my life that we did not think was possible.
Blessings to family, friends and patients that are feeling the loss of this magnificent human, wife, mother, daughter, granddaughter, friend and doctor. R.I.P. Dr. Claire Montaigne, you made the world a better place during your short time on this earth and achieved so much, you will not be forgotten.
