CONSTANCE AYERS Obituary

AYARS--Constance. On Sunday, December 22, 2019, Constance Ayars (nee Zeiger), passed away at the age of 69. Constance was born on August 2, 1950 in Brooklyn, NY to Rose Baffa Zeiger and Edward Zeiger and grew up in Tenafly, NJ. She then obtained a degree in fine arts at Skidmore College. After college, Constance lived in Los Angeles, CA where she worked as a gra- phic designer and obtained a graduate degree at UCLA. She then made a career change and pursued a law degree, graduating from Yale Law. Upon completion of her J.D., Constance moved to New York City, joined Cravath, Swaine & Moore where she practiced as a corporate attorney for 25 years, and lived in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Constance always stayed connected to art. She had an extensive private collection, and especially enjoyed collecting the art of her favorite artist and dear friend, Mark Beard. After retiring from law, Constance moved to Old Lyme, CT and returned to practicing her first love, art. She primarily painted in watercolor and completed over 800 pieces, sometimes painting a new work each day, up until her death. Her artwork has been shown at the Cooley Gallery, the Lyme Art Association, and the Essex Art Association. Her final exhibit, "A Few of My Favorite Things," was on display at Chelsea Frames in Manhattan. She is survived by her beloved friend since birth, Maureen Previti, and Maureen's family (husband Frank, son Robert, and daughters Christina and Regina).

I met Connie when I was 19 through my husband who worked with her at ARCO. We had great times enjoying the California lifestyle and she was always great fun with lots of personality. One of the smartest people I ever knew, Connie was also the most generous and warm friend. She could do anything, and did 2 Masters together, then back to the East Coast to Law School. With us both living in New York again, we re-engaged and I will always remember her for those years. She was strong, alive, charming, and incredibly supportive. After my divorce she brought me with her to her family's for the holidays. We visited her alma mater, went to the races at Saratoga, and she introduced me to her art and that of others. There have been few people as memorable in my life as Connie. Her last years seemed to be filled with art, which was her passion, and I am glad of that. I will miss her.

I'm so sorry I hadnt heard sooner about Connie. She was so very special to you all and was an amazing artist and soul. May she rest in peace and many prayers to you Aunt Maureen and family.

I worked for Connie as her secretary for four years in the early 1990s, although we continued to work together at Cravath for many more years. Connie was a lot of fun. She had an eccentric sense of humor, a wonderful laugh, a stellar sense of style, and she was a great cook. Conversation around her dinner table was delightful and I always looked forward to her invitations. Connie's passing saddens me greatly. I will miss her spirit.

Connie served as counsel on many deals I worked on as a banker. She was one of my favorite attorneys and we spent many long hours and all-nighters together in conference rooms. I now wish I had known about her artistic side. So much we could have chatted about. May she rest peacefully.
