DANIEL BALDWIN Obituary

BALDWIN--Daniel. Passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, age 72. Devoted husband of Nancy; adoring father of Matthew (Shelly), Joshua (Gabi) and Julia; grandfather of Emily, Zoe, Natalie, Zadie, and Zack; beloved brother of Neil (Roberta), Andrew (Susan), and James. Proud alumnus of P.S. 87, Horace Mann School, Yale University, and Columbia University Law School. Dan was a Manhattan-born Yankee fan, lifelong Fire Island beach lover, aficionado of all kinds of music, omnivorous reader, and the kindest person. Donations in his honor may be sent to Care for the Homeless (where he served as Board Chair Emeritus), and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. A memorial service is planned for the spring.

I didn't know Daniel Baldwin, but met Julia Baldwin when she was brought to my door as a baby by her parents in Lincoln Towers in July 1998. I wrote Julia a poem, "Julia Wein Baldwin" - "a very small person of perfect design". I wish Julia and her family my deepest condolences, for the loss of a father is truly devastating and always unexpected. May his memory be a blessing.

I believe Daniel Baldwin is the father of Julia Wein Baldwin. I met Daniel's daughter as a neighbor on the floor of Lincoln Towers. Julia was a small baby, and I wrote her a poem: Julia Wein Baldwin - "a very small person of perfect design". Julia's parents brought Julia to my door and they appreciated the poem - from July 1998. My deepest sympathy to Julia and her family for the loss of her father. It is truly devastating to lose a devoted father, and Daniel had the compassion and kindness I saw in the family.

I met Danny in HM when I joined the IV Form in 1967. Being home-schooled before that, it was awkward for me to make friends. I noted how Danny's considerate, non-flashy demeanor would welcome a friendly conversation, anecdotes, and to see how his compassion grew into his stellar career of approaching homelessness with a genuine compassion, is just more empathy than most of us have! Of course, in retrospect I realize had I kept in better touch with Danny (as I did with others in the class) I would have learned much from him and his motives for such a benevolent, altruistic life. You are a great man, Danny! Richard Trifan

Dan's attachment to the cause of improving the lives of those with the experience of homelessness was endearing. His service was enhanced by a gentle personality that was embellished with a dollop of humor. The effect was winning. He gave those of us with the experience of homelessness a deep appreciation for his compassion and devotion over the years. His long time of service, and his storytelling, fostered trust.

Dan was an exemplary volunteer leader at Care For the Homeless, demonstrating a deep compassion for New York City's homeless population. And his leadership made a difference in our work. He was soft-spoken but his wit was as dry as a bone! He will be greatly missed by all, especially his beloved wife, children and siblings.

Dan has been a dear friend for almost five decades and I will profoundly miss his incisive intelligence, his elevating wit, and his heartfelt involvement with music, literature, culture, politics, family and friends.
My deepest sympathies to Nancy and the rest of the family.
