DANIEL TURCHIN Obituary
TURCHIN--Daniel, born August 12, 1921, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at 4:15pm. He was just four weeks shy of his 92nd birthday. He was born in Brooklyn at 1560 East 22nd Street. He attended James Madison High School, class of '37, graduating at 16 years old; Brooklyn College, class of '41, which he graduated at age 20; and NYU, where he graduated with an MBA in 1943 at age 22. He completed Brooklyn Law School in 1949 and was admitted to the New York State Bar that same year, thereafter qualifying as a certified public accountant in New York State. Among his many clients, he was always proud to have served the Lawyers Guild in its youth. He counted numerous former clients as dear, life-long friends, who relied on him both for his knowledge and his calm sensible advise. Daniel Turchin took complete joy in every aspect of life. He was a violinist, an athlete, and bridge player. He played the violin in high school for the All New York City High School Orchestra, in the orchestra in India during his service there in World War II, in the Akron Ohio Symphony Orchestra, and after he retired in the Sunshine Orchestra in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He was on the swimming and diving teams at Brooklyn College, ice skated, skied, bicycled, played tennis, rode horseback, and sailed. He passed on his love of music, math, sports, and enjoyment of life to his children and grandchildren. During World War II, he was stationed in India, where he was a Powerman 166 and a Rifle Marksman and Carbine Sharpshooter. His sergeant told him, "You talk like a boy, but you shoot like a man." Dan said that he was able to shoot so straight from years of holding the violin steady. He received a Sharpshooter Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. The funeral service will be held Wednesday July 17, 2013, at 12:45pm at Sinai Chapel, 162-05 Horace Harding Boulevard, Fresh Meadows, Queens. The family will be sitting shiva on Wednesday night at the home of daughter Lauren Orent in Roslyn, NY and on Thursday and Friday at the home of daughter Michele Mirman in Brooklyn, NY. Daniel Turchin is survived by his loving family who miss him already: his wife Lillian, son Lee Turchin, daughters Michele Mirman and Lauren Orent, grandchildren David Turchin, Matthew and Phoebe Mirman, Elizabeth and David Orent, daughter in law Karin Turchin and sons-in-law Richard Orent and Paul Mirman, brother-in-law Joseph Scherrer and nephews Douglas James and Daniel and Paul Scherrer.
