FRIEDRICHS--David. age 78, of Clarks Green, Pennsylvania, died there on December 1, 2022 of cancer. Born October 31, 1944 to K.O. and Nellie Friedrichs, he grew up in New Rochelle and was educated at NYU. He taught criminology, sociology, and criminal justice at CUNY-Staten Island and the University of Scranton, 1968-2018. His work focused principally on crimes of the powerful, and he produced several books and some 150 articles on this and many other topics. He gave invited lectures all over the world including in South Africa, Australia, Serbia, India and Sweden. From an early age he was privileged to visit 50 countries and all of the USA states. From the 1960s on he was engaged with progressive politics, starting with the civil rights and anti-war movements. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren and took much pleasure in time spent with them and members of his extended family, and he cherished friendships extending in some cases back sixty years or more. An intellectual and curious person, he read The New York Times every day of his adult life, but he will be remembered most for his kindness.

I took his criminology course to satisfy a requirement, and I still remember it as one of the best classes I´ve ever taken - and him as one of the best teachers I´ve ever had. Condolences to all who love him.

I´m sorry to hear of the loss of Professor Friedrichs. His sociology 101 class at University of Scranton really challenged my very limited understanding of the world and helped me uncover beliefs I didn´t know I had over 30 years ago. A wonderful teacher!

So sad to hear of David´s passing. I got to know him through numerous interactions over the years at the American Society of Criminology (ASC) annual meetings. He was a true pioneer in the study of white-collar/corporate crime and state crime. Moreover, he was a kind, generous individual. He will be sorely missed.
