David's work was vital. It provided evidence that strongly supported Open Admissions and social justice. His research was so impressive that when I met him, I expected to see an imposing, reserved man, looking like one of the statues of American's heroes. What a pleasure to talk to a down-to-earth, friendly, humble man with a gentle sense of humor. He was so fun to talk to. We were all fortunate that he came to CUNY.

David Lavin was a humanitarian whose scholarly work proved that if the doors to higher education at CUNY were finally opened to people of color, they would defy the stereotypes to succeed and contribute greatly to our city and nation. His was a mighty voice for justice and equality. It was an honor to have known him.

David was one of my favorite colleagues, a lovely person whose work benefited all of us at CUNY. I regret I won't be able to attend his memorial service, due to a commitment at the annual meetings of ESS, on whose Executive Committee I had the pleasure to serve with David. My condolences to his family.

Dave Lavin was a fine professor, a committed researcher, and one of the nicest folks I've met during my time studying sociology. He will be missed.

David did incredibly important research, documenting the benefits of Open Admissions for hundreds of thousands of students, especially students of color. He also was a kind and wonderful person. This is a tremendous loss. But he will live on as an inspiration.

I'm very saddened by Dave Lavin's passing away. We've lost an insightful, courageous, and committed scholar who did so much to illuminate the egalitarian potential of higher education. We've also lost a friend whose wit, warmth, and joie de vivre enlivened us all.
