DAVID LAVIN Obituary

LAVIN--David E. We are saddened by the death of David E. Lavin, who died on March 14th from Lymphoma. He led a wonderful life and enjoyed politics, music, sports, traveling the world and spending time with his family at his home in Bridgehampton, his favorite place. David graduated from Scarsdale High School, attended Colby College and received his M.A. and Ph.D in Sociology at New York University. He began his career as a research fellow in social relations at Harvard University. He taught at University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University before joining the faculty at City University of New York's Graduate Center and Lehman College. As a sociologist, his work focused on studying higher education's effect on increasing opportunities for the underprivileged. He authored numerous books and articles. In 2009, he and his colleague, Paul Attewell, received both the prestigious Grawemeyer Award as well as an Outstanding Book Award from the American Educational Research Association for "Passing The Torch: Does Higher Education for the Disadvantaged Pay Off Across the Generations?". His interesting mind, sense of humor, and love will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He is survived by daughters, Nina, Jenny and Samantha, sons-in-law, Taylor and Mark, grandchildren, Tia, Ava, Harry and Gray, ex-wife, Marguerite Lavin and partner, Barbara Heyns. A memorial service will be held at 11:30am on Friday, March 22nd at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street. A reception will follow.

David's work was vital. It provided evidence that strongly supported Open Admissions and social justice. His research was so impressive that when I met him, I expected to see an imposing, reserved man, looking like one of the statues of American's heroes. What a pleasure to talk to a down-to-earth, friendly, humble man with a gentle sense of humor. He was so fun to talk to. We were all fortunate that he came to CUNY.

David Lavin was a humanitarian whose scholarly work proved that if the doors to higher education at CUNY were finally opened to people of color, they would defy the stereotypes to succeed and contribute greatly to our city and nation. His was a mighty voice for justice and equality. It was an honor to have known him.

David was one of my favorite colleagues, a lovely person whose work benefited all of us at CUNY. I regret I won't be able to attend his memorial service, due to a commitment at the annual meetings of ESS, on whose Executive Committee I had the pleasure to serve with David. My condolences to his family.

Dave Lavin was a fine professor, a committed researcher, and one of the nicest folks I've met during my time studying sociology. He will be missed.

David did incredibly important research, documenting the benefits of Open Admissions for hundreds of thousands of students, especially students of color. He also was a kind and wonderful person. This is a tremendous loss. But he will live on as an inspiration.

I'm very saddened by Dave Lavin's passing away. We've lost an insightful, courageous, and committed scholar who did so much to illuminate the egalitarian potential of higher education. We've also lost a friend whose wit, warmth, and joie de vivre enlivened us all.
