FLORENCE DAVIS Obituary

DAVIS--Florence Ann, 68. Beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, colleague, friend, and much more, died at home on May 21, following a battle with ovarian cancer. From 1999 until her death, Florence served as president of The Starr Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the country - a role in which she came to know and love much of the world, but especially New York City, her home. Raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Florence graduated from Wellesley College in 1976 with highest honors, a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1979, she earned a law degree from New York University School of Law, where she was a Root-Tilden Scholar. She practiced law at Sullivan & Cromwell before moving to Morgan Stanley, where she became a Principal and Director of Worldwide Regulatory Affairs. In 1995, at scarcely 40 years old, with two young children, Florence became Vice President and General Counsel of American International Group, Inc., a role she held for four years. She made it look easy - or, at the very least, she made it look possible. Florence was a role model for many people, particularly young mothers working in male-dominated industries. She was deeply engaged with innumerable charitable organizations and educational institutions, including as a trustee of New York University and its law school; a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden; and with the Council on Foreign Relations, the International Rescue Committee, and the Newman's Own Foundation. (We are hopeful that in the afterlife she will once again get to sit next to Paul Newman on a plane.) She loved gardening, Cape Cod, gimmicky tchotchkes, the salty ends of roasted meat, puzzles and word games, the Science Times, nature shows, and entertaining other peoples' babies on mass transit. She was tough, she was kind; she was an incredible mother. Anyone wishing to make contributions in Florence's memory may consider any of the charities in which she was involved, but her family would like to give special mention to the New York Botanical Garden and the Louisiana Parole Project. She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca and Sarah Davis O'Brien; her mother Charlotte Davis McGhee; her stepfather Richard McGhee Jr.; her sister Netta Davis; her brother Barnett Davis III; her granddaughter Dusty Davis Orwall; and many cousins, step-children and step-grandchild- ren. She was predeceased by her father, Richard Max Davis, and her second husband, Anthony Gooch.

I was privileged to sit at the same table at a big Gala for the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, in 2019, with Florence Davis. I knew nobody, and these were celebrities in my eyes as a military caregiver fellow representing North Carolina. Florence made it a point to engage me in conversation and ease my burden. I felt as if she was a fast friend, and this is hard to get at a big event. Florence had the uncanny ability to make me feel special, and relevant. When my daughter was positioned in New York City with JP Morgan, we visited Florence in her office as she had given me an invitation from the gala the year before. She was just as warm and inviting and we left her office that afternoon, feeling as if we were the most special people of Manhattan. I don´t know that I will ever meet anyone who gives me this feeling again. and from the bottom of my heart I say thank you Florence.

Dear Rebecca and Sarah:
I got to know your mother when I, along with Judge Thompson and your mother, were appointed to review certain matters dealing with The Starr Foundation. I found your mother to be extremely bright, tough but fair, and a pleasure to work with. She contributed so much to the betterment of us all. She will be truly missed. With best regards.

Dear Rebecca and Sarah

You mother was my very best friend when she lived in Squirrel Hill on Beechwood Blvd and later when she moved to Churchill. We went to Colfax Elementary together. We really were beasties. We called ourselves Klorence Bavis your mom, and I was Faren Daseman as we exchanged first letters of our names. I also remember your grandma and your Uncle Barnett. Your mom was always the smartest person in the room and the smartest I ever knew. May her name and memory be a blessing forever.

Dear Rebecca and Sarah,
I am deeply saddened to learn about your Mother´s illness and passing. Florence hired me to be General Counsel of AIG´s US business in 1998. I met the two of you at Morefar along with my children, Lars and Megan Leafblad. We all adored your amazing mother and have fond memories of our time with you. We send our heartfelt love to you as you grieve and celebrate her life. We are deeply grateful for having known her and shared a bit of her precious time with us. From Minneapolis with love, Peg Birk.
