Frank Melville III

MELVILLE--Frank, III, died at Noble Horizons on December 5th after a long illness. He was the husband of Allen Whitley Melville. Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 12, 1923, the son of Ward and Dorothy Bigelow Melville. He attended Princeton University before joining the Navy Air Force during WWII. After the war he worked briefly as a book designer before joining the fledgling History Book Club, from which he retired as president in 1978. He served as a trustee of The Pomfret School and Sarah Lawrence College, and was throughout his life a strong supporter of liberal causes and organizations, particularly the American Civil Liberties Union. After moving from New Canaan to Norfolk in 1980 he was the guiding spirit behind the Melville Charitable Trust from its inception in 1990 and was passionately committed to its goal of putting an end to homelessness in the United States. Predeceased by his older sisters Margaret and Ruth. Besides his wife survived by his four sons, Stephen, Lanning, Gregory and Cameron. A younger brother David, three grandchildren, Geoffrey Melville, Alan Thomas Melville and Erin Benjamin Melville.
