FRED COHEN Obituary

COHEN--Fred. We mourn the loss of Fred Cohen, who died in Tucson, Arizona on March 30, the eve of his 89th birthday. Throughout his career as a law professor, academic leader, prolific author, consulting attorney, and court-appointed monitor, he was an eloquent advocate for the humane treatment of incarcerated individuals. Born in the Bronx to an immigrant family from Russia, Fred spent his childhood in Yeadon, Pennsylvania. He attended Temple University as a 6'6'' basketball player who set the record for 34 rebounds in an NCAA semi-final game against UConn. A record which still stands. After earning his degree at Yale Law School, Fred taught at the Universities of Denver and Texas Law Schools. He co-founded the PhD program in criminal justice at UAlbany, a multi-disciplinary curriculum adopted by law schools nationwide. He was respected for his Socratic method, analytical skills, and razor-sharp wit. Fred's casebook, The Law of Deprivation of Liberty, bridged the gap between legal doctrine and the behavioral sciences. He was co- founder of the Civic Research Institute and Correctional Law Reporter, and founder of Correctional Mental Health Report. A giant in the field, Renaissance man, and deeply compassionate human being, Fred's passing is a profound loss for correctional law, his colleagues, and students. His memory will be cherished by his children, Roger, Rachel, and Reuben; his grandchildren, Beau and Miller; and his beloved wife, Emily Nash. To honor Fred's memory, contributions can be made to the ACLU National Prison Project and the Prison and Jail Innovation Lab at the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Policy.
