HUGO HOOGENBOOM Obituary

HOOGENBOOM--Hugo. Born on February 9, 1934 in The Hague, he departed peacefully on July 21, 2020 at home in New York City with his family at his side. Predeceased by his parents, Martin and Isabel Hoogenboom, he grew up in Palm Beach, FL and Beaufort, SC.; graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1951 and from Washington and Lee University in 1961 with an LL. B. During a hiatus from W&L he studied Mandarin Chinese and served with United States Army Intelligence in Korea. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Edith; son, Peter (Alenka Mandic); daughter, Elizabeth Clary (Gabriel); their children, Emma Louise and Ethan Hugo; and brother, Beecher Hoogenboom, of Beaufort, SC. His professional career was focused on non-profit global assistance: USAID, Far East Bureau (1962-1968); Population Council (1969-1981); President of EngenderHealth (1981-1995); President of Population Action International 1995-1997) and finally, General Manager of the Little Orchestra Society, before retiring. Known for his wit and infectious laugh, he relished spirited conversations with colleagues at the Century Assoc. He was elegant, singular, cynical but kind, loving and loyal. He disliked liars, bloviators, racists, rudeness, and self-serving politicians; loved opera, jazz, good wine, Edie's cooking, 12th Century Korean celadon, working in Asia, vacationing in Provence, Laurel & Hardy, W.C. Fields, S.J. Perelman, Ambrose Bierce, Anthony Trollope, Andy Capp, Calvin and Hobbes, puns, movies, dogs, and most of all, his children and grandchildren. To Emerson Gozun, his loyal caregiver, the family gives special thanks. Contributions in his name may be made to the Mt. Sinai Multiple Myeloma Prog. or EngenderHealth. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.

Hugo was always kind, considerate, patient, and loving. What a joy to share our experience in New York we can all hope to reserve what are memories of Hugo can be reflected in our own lives. On a daily basis Edith was a gift to Hugo, and the both of them to all of us.

I posted a memory last year, and I appreciate this reminder that it has been a year. I only knew Hugo during his Washington & Lee days, but even then the qualities others have written about were clear: Hugo was so easy to be around, so un-full of himself, so interested in others. And let's not forget, he had a great sense of humor -- dry and observant and very witty. He was, after all, Editor of the university's humor magazine.

I just learned of Hugo's passing from a booklet sent by Washington & Lee. He was Editor of The Southern Collegian, W&L's humor magazine at the time, which the university saw fit to get rid of year later, but his sense of humor was there in the magazine and he mentored me so well that I was able to follow him as Editor, though I never could live up to his fabulous dry wit. I love the fact that he went on to work within non-profits his whole life, as have I. He was a truly wonderful person.

Hugo was a good friend and colleague from the day we both started working at the Population Council in 1968. Hugo was funny, fun, competent, hard-working and focused on rights based population policies and delivering family planning services. He directed the Asian program where I had worked beginning in 1962.
I cherish the love, admiration and fond memories. Edie condolences to you and your family

One of the greatest joys of returning to St. Roman each summer was reuniting with Hugo and Edie. Handsome and happy, humble and easy to be around, any occasion was improved with his company. Our children adored him.
My heart goes out to the entire family but especially to you Edie. Lots of love from The Wolpes.
