IRVING BUTERMAN Obituary

BUTERMAN--Irving MD. Irving Buterman, MD, passed away on March 30, 2020, at the age of 78, due to complications resulting from COVID-19. Known to his loved ones as Poppy, Irving was a selfless human being, devoted husband and father, compassionate physician, and valued mentor to his colleagues. Dr. Buterman was born in Biskupice, Poland, in 1941, as his parents were fleeing from the Nazis. Born two months premature, he was not expected to live. His humble beginnings no doubt played a pivotal role in him becoming an OB/GYN, who for over 50 years, spent every day bringing life into this world. After immigrating with his family to America, Dr. Buterman attended Thomas Jefferson High School and then City College of New York. He received his medical degree from the University of Amsterdam Faculty of Medicine. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Marianne. Dr. Buterman did his residency in OB/GYN at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York where he remained on the staff until his passing. He also completed a fellowship in gynecological oncology, and obtained a Master's degree in public health from Columbia University in New York. Over the course of his career, he delivered well over 10,000 babies. He is mourned by his patients who have shared stories of how he was not only a skilled practitioner, but also a loving father figure who consoled and guided them in their happiest moments and darkest hours. Building a legacy of children and grandchildren was his most cherished achievement. Dr. Buterman is survived by his wife of 50 years Marianne, his children Esther, Lawrence and Ilana, their spouses Kenny, Ashley and Erik, respectively, and his grandchildren Brianna, Spencer, Julius, Piper, Meijer and Adaline, and his sister Ellen Berger.

I have nothing but fond memories of Dr. Buterman. I worked for him when he was just starting out. He was such a kind and dedicated doctor who also had a great sense of humor. He was very devoted to his family and spoke of them often. Those who knew and loved him will never forget.

Gone but never forgotten! This great man gave me my first start in medicine, believing in me straight out of school when I barely had experience.
I am now 20 yrs into my medical career and will never forget the day I walked into his office as a new Medical Assistant and all the advice and teachings he gave me.
Love and respect for him forever and always, He is greatly missed!
Always well dressed in his suits and fancy cuff links, a charmer, awesome storyteller and wonderful physician who cared for his staff and patients wholeheartedly.
Still hurts to know Covid took him away from us.
My love and prayers to his wife Marion and lovely children/grandchildren whom he always talked about.
Great honor it was to know and work alongside him for 4.5 yrs before I moved to Tx.
He attended my mother´s wake when she passed in 2006, he walked down the aisle at the Funeral Chapel in East Flatbush, Brooklyn and greeted me with a hug and that meant the world to me,
He always told me I had a place back in his office if ever necessary. Rest peacefully Sir!

I was just watching the Netflix series "Lenox Hill" and it made me think about Dr. Buterman so decided to look him up and came upon this page. I am so sorry for your loss. I was a patient of Dr. Buterman's from the age of 15 (1976) until the time I moved to California in 1997. Dr. Buterman was so caring and understanding and he played such an important part in my life in both good times and bad. He delivered my beautiful daughter at Lenox Hill in 1994, and when I was living in California and pregnant with my son, he used to tell me that he would fly out to San Francisco to deliver my son here if I really wanted him to!! That was exactly who he is. A very dedicated, trustworthy, excellent doctor, caring, compassionate and an overall good, kind man, and an amazing doctor. I send my condolences to his family and friends. Please know that I hold him in my memories very fondly. I"m so honored to have known him.

I just found out today about the passing of one of the most wonderful doctors that I have ever known. Dr Buterman had been my caring OBGYN since I was about 25 years of age and had a particular medical issue. He determined how to treat me, and became number one on my doctor list at that time! He later delivered both of my sons and was always very kind and supportive throughout my life and medical concerns. When I walked into his examining room or office, he would fondly call me "Mamala"! I cried all morning when I heard of his untimely death from Covid. My sincerest sympathies go out to his family, staff and all the women and families whose lives he positively touched. I will always remember this wonderful doctor and friend!

Just saw a billboard in union square about Dr Buterman. He delivered my son Maxime in Sept 2019. We really appreciated his ability to make us comfortable and to go with our wish to deliver naturally - despite the little boy being almost 10 pounds and all the more younger doctor pushing by default for a c-section. He delivered successfully my son and overall was a very calm and professional doctor. A real gem. My wife and I are really sorry to hear about his passing and present his family our deepest condolences
Best,
The Neyme family.

Dr. Buterman delivered our first son in the summer of 1992. Knowledgable, resolute, and calm he doctored us through our pregnancy. He told me as I arrived in early labor in the wee hours to "have a glass of red wine and come back in the morning", which I did :) He arranged to see me at Lenox Hill after our son was born as I worried about my post-delivery recovery, driving me back to our Upper West Side apartment. He reminded me of my father, a pediatrician, who also had the ability to make meaningful connections with his patients. May his memory be a blessing.

For some reason I decided to see if Dr. Buterman was still practicing. I was saddened to learn of his passing. He delivered my healthy daughter in 8/2004. He was not only calming and certain with his practice, he was highly knowledgeable and avoided unnecessary procedures. There was a medical student at my delivery and I can still remember how he calmly explained why he needed to use forceps...something the inexperienced don’t use. He delivered my daughter with zero complications. I am sure he has passed down all his expertise to the next generation.

r. Buterman was one of the last great doctors of my generation. He was also a wonderful person who was very supportive and accepting. He cared more about human beings than money. That he should pass away from this horrible curse of a disease breaks my heart. How many more great people will be stricken? The good that he's done all of his life will live on and he will always be remembered. May God bless his soul. I was a patient of his.

Dr. Buterman embodied all of the characteristics that one can conjure. He was compassionate, generous with his time, always had a smile for me at the Lenox Hill elevator bank, always a kind word when he saw you. He delivered our children who are now 38 and 39. Our son was a difficult delivery but Dr. Expertise was top notch. I have so many fond memories of this dear man. My condolences to his family. Your pictures were always evident in his office.
